LAGOS FIRST LADY FLAGS OFF POLIO VACCINATION FOR CHILDREN IN FIVE LGAs

Lagos State First Lady, Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu on Friday flagged off the 2020 Polio Vaccination Exercise for children in five Local Governments (LGs) and Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) of the State, vowing that the State Government would continue to implement various initiatives to safeguard the health of residents.

Speaking at the flag-off ceremony held at the Secretariat Complex of Somolu Local Government, Mrs. Sanwo-Olu said that although Nigeria had been certified polio-free, conscious efforts must be put in place to ward off the threat of the virus which, according to her, necessitated the vaccination exercise.

In her words: “This Polio free status can only be maintained by strengthening our routine immunisation services and regular surveillance activity in our communities for both wild and vaccine-derived polioviruses and acute flaccid paralysis”.

“We should also bear in mind that few other countries which are yet to be certified free of poliovirus will still constitute a threat to the whole world. Therefore, the need for us as a nation to continue with our vaccination strategy in order to improve the health of our children and guarantee their survival to economically viable adults cannot be overemphasised”, she said.

The First Lady commended health workers for their service to humanity despite the challenges so far witnessed this year, especially with regards to the global COVID-19 pandemic.

While reiterating the commitment of the administration of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to ramp up healthcare, the First Lady urged residents, especially parents and guardians, to take advantage of the vaccination exercise to protect their children and wards against the virus.

Earlier, Permanent Secretary of Lagos State Primary Health Care Board, Dr. Olugbemiga Aina said it is essential for people to ensure that eligible children within communities are adequately vaccinated, adding “We must ensure that our communities are rid of the virus because as long as wild poliovirus is still in circulation in some countries, the whole world remains at risk”.

He said that during the exercise, vaccination teams would visit residential homes, schools, churches, mosques, gated estates and all public places where eligible children will be vaccinated.

The representatives of the Federal Government, World Health Organisation (WHO) and the United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF) commended the State Government for taking the lead in healthcare initiatives, especially to protect children.

The first round of the vaccination holds from November 14 to 17, while the second round will take place between December 12 and 15, 2020 in Apapa, Lagos Mainland, Mushin, Somolu and Surulere.

Recall that the African Regional Commission had formally declared Nigeria Polio free on 25th August 2020, but the vaccination exercise was initiated as a result of environmental circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2 (cVDPV2) detected at Makoko, Asegere Market in Lagos Mainland in September.

Through the exercise, children between 0 – 5 years would be vaccinated with two drops of oral polio vaccine, regardless of their previous immunisation status, to prevent poliomyelitis that may result in paralysis of the limbs or death.

Agaba masquerade which is also known as Mmuo Agaba in Igbo, is an indigenous Igbo masquerade which originated from Nkanu an Igbo sub group found mostly in Enugu state.

Agaba is a matchet-bearing and fearsome masquerade. It is known for it’s huge and jutting teeth and ugly persona. Agaba is not a masquerade for childish display, It has been rated to be among most powerful spirits in Igbo land because of the powerful charms it possesses.

Agbaja descents who are originally from Ezeagu, Udi, Oji river etc migrated and settled in Idah, when this group of Igbos settled in Idah, Attah Idah was informed that some group of persons have come to settle in his territory. Immediately Attah Idah went to see these new settlers, after welcoming the Igbo settlers, they surmoned the Agaba masquerade to entertain Attah Idah. On the arrival of the masquerade the settlers greeted the Agaba masquerade AGABA EDU meaning the “GREAT MASQURADE FROM THE FOREST”. The word EDU means forest in Nkanu dialect, in those days shrines of some masquerades were located inside the forest. Lest we forget, I said earlier that MMUO AGABA(Agaba masquerade) originated from Nkanu.

Attah Idah borrowed this hailing phrase though today it has been corrupted both in spellimgs and meaning. AGABA EDU is misspelt by Idah people as AGABAIDU which mans in Igala “THE GREAT ONE”.
Till today the Agbaja people who are originally from present day Enugu state are settled in Kogi east and Attah Idah is addressed as AGABAIDU.

We have to look for another music apple player for us to enjoy music.

Google is known to discontinue many of it’s apps that we have so come to love such as Google plus and now this. We don’t know why they choose to do this to us. We so get used to their product, Bang, they would yank it off! This music app of theirs come with quality and the sound output HD , one of the finest in the Playstore.

Google said “Google Play Music will be shutting down by December 2020 and starting September, members will begin to lose access to the service”

According to Ellisa Bain of HITC, she said “Google actually announced a really long time ago that the Google Play Music Store would be disappearing in the near future, and back in August they finally put a date on it, confirming that it would be discontinued in September 2020.”

“They began to roll it out gradually, first discontinuing Google Play Music in New Zealand and South Africa before the rest of the world followed in October.”,Bain added.

Though Google gave us a soft landing and didn’t want us to be fully heartbroken by taking us another route though many of us find that cumbersome which is youtube library channel. Personally I found that cumbersome and till date I couldn’t migrate my music.

**As former Mexican president, others push for political reforms

A quest to understand the interconnection between politics and economic performance in a democratic society motivated Richard von Weizacker fellowship and research study at the Robert Bosch Academy in Berlin, Germany, Dr. Obiageli Ezekwesili said on Wednesday.

She stated this at the public launch of #FixPolitics, where she presented findings from her fellowship research on how to fix politics in Nigeria and Africa more broadly.

Ezekwesili invited 124 Nigerians from diverse fields of endeavour and geopolitical zones to collaborate on designing the research findings over the last one year as a Work Study Group. The group is the co-leadership organ responsible for an integrated citizens-led actions to fix the broken political system.

She pointed out that politics in Nigeria was not fulfilling the core requirement of a democratic system, which was to provide good governance for the common wellbeing of citizens.

“My research findings primarily reinforce that the poor state of affairs in Nigeria is the consequence of the quality of politics at play. Politics is at the heart of everything any society can or will become. The essential process of democracy is not complete without politics,” the 2019 Nigerian Presidential candidate said.

In her study, she established primarily that in a democratic system, “there are three triangular pillars which determine the kind of outcomes that politics will produce for the people.

Explaining the concept, the former World Bank vice president said, “On the right angle or demand side of the triangle is the electorate; on the left or supply side is the politicians, political class and parties; and at the top is the regulatory – constitutional, legal, electoral and institutional context within which the politics happen.”

According to her, these tripod pillars create an interconnecting network of actions that determine the outcomes of every political system.

“Every pillar or angle of the triangle must function effectively and concurrently with the other two to enable the right quality of politics that will deliver strong economic performance for a people.

“In evaluating the outcome of politics in Nigeria and Africa, my study established that the quality of the electorate, quality of political class and quality and lack of independence and capacity of political institutions constitute a structural and systemic problem for democracy and must therefore be fixed by citizens,” Ezekwesili said.

She also said, “The research found that Nigeria is ridden with politicians without competing ideas of how to solve the problems of citizens, who lack a culture of public service and subordinate the common good to their personal and narrow interests.

“The constitutional, legal, institutional and regulatory environment is compromised by the political class to more frequently act without independence, fairness and adherence to the rule of law. The political space is thus completely monopolised by the supply side of governance, that is the political class,  thereby causing political, economic and social stagnation for the nation and people.

“Currently in our politics, voters generally lack the level of influence necessary to compel the right political processes and good outcomes that serve the good of all in society.

“The bright prospect is that evidence from the #FixPolitics research shows that citizens are the only angle of the triangle that can act and propel systemic change by collectively and decisively acting for their common good.”

To alter the status quo, Ezekwesili said only the electorate “have the incentive to correct the abnormality in a political system.”

She added, “It is the collective effort of citizens that can change the quality of political class and compel the kind of constitutional and electoral changes required to achieve good governance.”

Delivering a keynote address, former President Felipe Calderon of Mexico said there was an enormous gap between the interests of the citizens and that of the politicians, which he saw as a major problem to a democratic setting.

“To fix politics in Nigeria, the citizens and the politicians must work together and represent the same in practical life,” he said.

Calderon further said that “citizens must change their perception of politics and political participation rather than holding to a view that politics is for corrupt and dishonest people.”

According to him, corrupt people are quite the opposite of what politics stands. “To fix politics is what happens when the people participate and take responsibility to provide political participation with ethical sense and ethical parameters,” Calderon added.

In a goodwill message, former President of Malawi, Dr. Joyce Banda, said politics should be seen as an inclusive love affair and if institutionally implemented, “Africa will witness a great change in its democratic system.”

While dissecting the dynamics of democracy, three intergenerational panels with discussants like Prof. Atahiru Jega, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, Pastor Tunde Bakare, Aisha Yesufu, Iyinoluwa Aboyeji, Jude Abaga(also known as M.I Abaga), Cynthia Mbamalu, Yemi Adamolekun, Samson Itodo, among others, agreed that there was an emerging consensus to fix politics in Nigeria as the status quo was untenable and unsustainable.

Speakers like Dr. Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, Ayo Sogunro, Ndi Kato, Adewunmi Emoruwa, and Dr. Usman Bugaje highlighted that “there is a need for young people and women to fully engage in partisan politics, create platforms for political engagement, use politics as a tool for framing a shared vision based on a new dominant value orientation of public service, connect the elite with the grassroots and mobilise the Nigerian public to mount pressure on the legislature for the right constitutional and electoral changes.”

The Director General of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Mallam Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi has said that building a productive public, private partnership is key to the journey to build a better Nigeria.
The director general stated this while receiving the founder and CEO of Hotspot Network Limited, Engineer Morenikeji Aniye today 12th November, 2020 at the corporate headquarters of the Agency.

Speaking earlier, Mr. Aniye said he has been watching the Agency keenly from afar and observed the giant strides achieved within a short time, appreciating the efforts so far in digital inclusion.


In view of this, he said, his company is identifying with the NAVSA programme as Hotspots Network has a programme which is in tandem with the NAVSA scheme named “Digital farmers club”.


The Digital Farmers Club, he explained, is the deployment of voice and data 3G, 4G and 5G to rural areas. This programme he said will help energize the rural community agriculturally. Partnership with NITDA on NAVSA scheme he believes will take out the young farmers and women in rural areas and empower them digitally.


While thanking Mallam Abdullahi, Mr. Ayine expressed their support for the scheme and encourage the synergy of other partners to come on board and support the effort of the Federal Government.
