The Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. ‘Bosun Tijani, has reiterated the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s digital future through strategic investments in education, infrastructure, and research.
Dr. Tijani made this known during a high-profile visit to the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, where he delivered a keynote address focused on the pivotal role of Nigerian academic institutions in driving the nation’s digital and economic development.
Speaking at the event, the Minister praised OAU’s longstanding legacy of academic excellence and its significant contributions to national development. He noted that the university has produced influential leaders across key sectors such as technology, infrastructure, and enterprise, demonstrating the impact of strong academic foundations aligned with national goals.
“OAU’s record of excellence shows what can be achieved when academic rigor meets national purpose,” Dr. Tijani stated.
In line with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, the Minister announced major interventions to support the university’s digital transformation efforts. Through the Universal Service Provision Fund (USPF), the Federal Government will deploy up to 30 kilometres of fibre-optic infrastructure across OAU’s academic buildings and student hostels to improve internet connectivity and digital access on campus.
Additionally, Dr. Tijani revealed that the government will fund one professorial research grant, three post-doctoral positions, and three PhD scholarships in priority areas of Nigeria’s digital economy. These initiatives will be implemented under the National Digital Economy Research Scheme, aimed at strengthening research capacity and developing skilled professionals in critical digital sectors.
According to the Minister, these investments reflect the government’s broader strategy to position universities as key partners in national innovation and economic growth.
“By investing in infrastructure, research, and talent, we are empowering our universities to help build a more innovative, inclusive, and digitally enabled Nigeria,” he said.
The visit underscores the Federal Government’s resolve to harness the power of education and technology to drive sustainable development and prepare Nigerian youths for the opportunities of the digital age.
