Artificial intelligence has reached another major milestone in global technology adoption, with ChatGPT emerging as the world’s most downloaded mobile application in 2025 across both iOS and Android platforms.
According to data compiled by Statisense using AppTweak analytics, ChatGPT recorded an impressive 845.3 million downloads, surpassing long-established social media giants such as Instagram, TikTok, Facebook and WhatsApp.
The achievement marks the first time a non-social networking application has led the global mobile app download rankings, underscoring the growing influence of generative artificial intelligence in everyday life. The surge in downloads reflects increasing consumer demand for AI-powered tools for work, education, content creation, research and personal productivity.
Instagram secured the second position with 762.3 million downloads, while TikTok ranked third with 545.8 million. WhatsApp Messenger followed closely in fourth place with 541.4 million downloads, highlighting the continued dominance of messaging platforms.
Video editing application CapCut occupied fifth place with 501.1 million downloads, benefiting from the expanding creator economy and the popularity of short-form video content.
TikTok Lite ranked sixth with 433.8 million downloads, while streaming platform Netflix came seventh with 415.6 million. Facebook maintained a strong presence in eighth position with 408.2 million downloads, despite increasing competition from newer platforms.
E-commerce platform Temu secured the ninth spot with 390 million downloads, reflecting growing consumer interest in online shopping apps, while Snapchat completed the top ten with 386.6 million downloads.
The 2025 rankings indicate a significant shift in global digital consumption patterns, with artificial intelligence rapidly moving from a niche technology to a mainstream consumer service. Industry analysts say the unprecedented popularity of ChatGPT demonstrates how AI assistants are becoming essential tools for millions of users worldwide, transforming how people access information, communicate, learn and create content.
