M-KOPA Named Among CNBC’s World’s Top Fintech Companies for Second Consecutive Year, Reaches 10 Million Customers
LAGOS – African fintech company M-KOPA has been recognised on CNBC’s World’s Top Fintech Companies 2026 list for the second consecutive year, marking another significant milestone in its mission to expand financial inclusion across the continent.
The recognition comes as the company celebrates reaching 10 million customers and the sale of 10 million smartphones across its five African markets. In Kenya, M-KOPA has also financed more than 10,000 electric motorcycles (e-bikes), reinforcing its commitment to supporting sustainable mobility and income generation.
M-KOPA’s business model is built around the financial realities of Africa’s everyday earners, providing affordable access to smartphones, productive assets, credit, insurance and other digital financial services. The company says this approach has enabled millions of underserved individuals to improve their livelihoods and build financial resilience.
According to the company, its impact continues to grow:
- 38% of customers obtained their first formal loan through M-KOPA, with the figure rising to 43% among women.
- 67% accessed health insurance for the first time through the platform.
- 70% use their M-KOPA-financed products to generate income.
- 86% reported an improvement in their overall quality of life.
Operationally, M-KOPA is onboarding more than 10,000 new customers every day, processing between 1.5 million and 2 million payments daily, and has unlocked over $2 billion in credit for customers across Africa.
The company described its inclusion in CNBC’s prestigious global fintech ranking as validation that a financial model designed specifically for Africa’s everyday earners can scale successfully across multiple markets while delivering meaningful social and economic impact.
Industry analysts say M-KOPA’s continued growth underscores the increasing importance of fintech innovation in addressing financial exclusion, expanding access to credit, and empowering millions of Africans with tools to improve their economic prospects.
