The Lagos State Government has opened its third Fresh Food Hub in Agege as part of efforts to improve access to affordable, quality food and strengthen the state’s food distribution system.
The opening ceremony, held on Wednesday, brought together government officials, diplomatic representatives, community stakeholders and other guests, with the event co-anchored by the writer and Kunle Adéyemí.
The Consul General of France in Lagos was among the dignitaries at the event. During the ceremony, the co-anchor welcomed the French diplomat in French, a gesture that attracted applause from members of the audience.
However, beyond the official activities at the event, the conduct of the Lagos State First Lady, Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, also attracted attention, particularly for what was described as her humility and respectful treatment of others.
According to the account, the co-anchors approached the First Lady to greet her. As they came closer, she reportedly attempted to stand up to receive them.
Although she was asked not to stand, she insisted on doing so and respectfully welcomed them before inviting them to take photographs with her.
The incident was highlighted as an example of the First Lady’s approach to public engagement, particularly her reported willingness to accord respect to people irrespective of their position or social status.
The writer said the First Lady is known for addressing men respectfully, including using the honorific “sir” even when interacting with people significantly junior to her in age, status or position.
The writer also recalled that, over the eight years of knowing her, the First Lady has consistently attended functions involving members of her staff, regardless of their rank.
According to the account, she has been known to attend events involving staff members even when such activities take place outside Lagos, including occasions involving workers such as cleaners and drivers.
The writer described this attitude as a reflection of humility, accessibility and respect for the dignity of every individual.
“I have known her for eight years. She is very consistent. I greatly admire people like this,” the writer said.
The commendation comes against the backdrop of the Fresh Food Hub initiative, which is aimed at improving food access and supporting residents by bringing fresh produce closer to communities.
The Agege facility becomes the third such hub opened by the Lagos State Government, expanding the initiative’s reach as the state continues to explore measures to strengthen food security and ease pressure on household food budgets.
The writer concluded by saying that positive conduct should also be acknowledged when witnessed, irrespective of political affiliations or public opinions.
“If I see something good, I will say it,” the writer said.
