Airtel Nigeria has reaffirmed its commitment to environmental sustainability and climate education with the continued rollout of its Airtel Green Schools Initiative, a programme designed to give students practical experience in environmental conservation and sustainable agriculture.
The initiative seeks to address the growing disconnect between children and nature, particularly in urban areas where school environments are increasingly dominated by concrete infrastructure with limited access to green spaces.
According to Airtel, the programme goes beyond classroom discussions by providing students with hands-on opportunities to cultivate gardens, understand biodiversity, and develop environmental stewardship from an early age.
As part of the initiative, schools are introducing biodiversity-focused farming by planting resilient crop varieties suited to their local climate and weather conditions. Students are also learning practical engineering skills by transforming discarded plastic bottles into hanging irrigation systems, demonstrating how waste materials can be repurposed into sustainable solutions.
To ensure the long-term success of the programme, Airtel is collaborating with the Durian Nigeria Foundation to equip participating schools with practical gardening knowledge and sustainable agricultural practices that can be maintained beyond the project’s initial phase.
The initiative also incorporates environmental literacy through storytelling, introducing students to Jojo and Jade: Heroes of Mother Earth, a children’s book written by environmental advocate Temilade Salami. The publication is aimed at nurturing environmental responsibility and inspiring young learners to become active custodians of the planet.
Airtel noted that planting seedlings represents only the first phase of the programme, adding that the initiative has been designed as a long-term model for environmental education, community engagement, and sustainable development.
Through the Airtel Green Schools Initiative, the telecommunications company hopes to cultivate a new generation of environmentally conscious Nigerians equipped with the knowledge and practical skills needed to contribute to a greener and more sustainable future.
