The Nigerian Communications Satellite Limited Nigerian Communications Satellite Limited (NIGCOMSAT) has joined the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, and heads of key government agencies to welcome Nigerian students who recently returned from China after competing in the Huawei Global ICT Competition.
The reception event highlighted Nigeria’s growing participation in international technology competitions and the increasing visibility of young Nigerian innovators on the global stage.
The students, drawn from institutions including Ahmadu Bello University, University of Lagos, Federal University of Technology Minna, University of Port Harcourt, Igbinedion University, and Nasarawa State University, competed against participants from several countries.
Nigeria recorded a strong performance at the competition, securing:
- Two Grand Prizes
- Two First Prizes
- One Second Prize
Officials also noted that Nigeria ranked as the most successful country outside China for the third consecutive year in the competition.
Beyond the awards, attention was drawn to the range of solutions developed by the students, including AI-based renewable energy applications and a solar-powered diagnostic tool capable of detecting malaria and intestinal parasites within minutes without internet connectivity.
The competition, organised under the Huawei Global ICT Competition, focuses on skills in Artificial Intelligence, Cloud Computing, and networking technologies.
Speaking at the reception, stakeholders emphasized the importance of sustained investment in STEM education, innovation ecosystems, and digital infrastructure to support the commercialization of student-led innovations.
They also reiterated that Nigeria’s long-term digital economy growth will depend on expanding access to mentorship, research opportunities, and technology infrastructure for young innovators.
Officials described the students’ performance as evidence of growing technical capacity within Nigerian universities and innovation hubs, noting that such achievements reflect broader national efforts to strengthen the country’s digital economy.
The delegation encouraged continued support for youth-driven innovation, positioning Nigeria’s human capital as a key driver of future technological development.
