Adesuwa Okunbo Rhodes, Managing Partner of Aruwa Capital Management, has been named a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum, marking a significant milestone in her journey as an investor focused on advancing women-led businesses in Africa.
Reacting to the recognition, Okunbo Rhodes described the honour as a moment of deep gratitude, reflecting on an earlier unsuccessful attempt to gain the same recognition in 2020, shortly after launching Aruwa Capital Management. She noted that the initial setback raised questions about whether her vision—centered on improving access to capital for women and reshaping investment narratives about Africa—was being acknowledged globally.
Despite the early rejection, she continued to build the firm, having left a well-paying career to establish the investment company with personal savings. In 2022, Aruwa Capital Management successfully raised its first institutional fund of over $20 million, with Okunbo Rhodes becoming the only female solo General Partner in Nigeria to raise more than $10 million in a first fund.
The firm has since expanded its footprint, with a portfolio of 15 companies and a growing team. Its second fund is reportedly oversubscribed, attracting participation from prominent global institutional investors.
Okunbo Rhodes emphasised that the recognition is not an endpoint but a validation of the firm’s investment thesis, which prioritises funding women-led and women-focused businesses as both high-impact and high-return opportunities within the African market.
She also highlighted the broader significance of the achievement, dedicating it to founders and women operating in challenging environments, and encouraging resilience in the face of rejection.
The Forum of Young Global Leaders, an initiative of the World Economic Forum, comprises over 1,400 leaders globally who are driving public-private cooperation. The 2026 cohort includes 118 leaders under the age of 40 from more than 55 countries.
Okunbo Rhodes expressed appreciation to her team, investors, and partners, reaffirming her commitment to continued impact and growth through Aruwa Capital Management.
