DG NIMC Stresses the Importance of Birth Registration in Shaping Nigeria’s Digital Identity

The Director General/CEO of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), Engr. Abisoye Coker-Odusote, has emphasized the critical role of birth registration and National Identification Number (NIN) registration in fostering Nigeria’s development.

Speaking at the launch of the “Renewed Hope Initiative” project to accelerate birth registration in Nigeria, Engr. Coker-Odusote highlighted the effective partnership between NIMC and the National Population Commission (NPC) as a testament to the achievements of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration in promoting digital identity and birth registration.

She commended the NPC for its efforts in digitalizing birth registration and affirmed NIMC’s commitment to continue as a key partner in the country’s social and educational reforms. “Birth registration is not only important for the individual; it is also crucial for the development of the nation,” she stated, reiterating that digital birth and NIN registration will enhance access to government services, including education, healthcare, and other social benefits, for all Nigerians.

The DG called on civil society, international partners, and all stakeholders to work together to make birth registration a universal practice in Nigeria. She noted that NIMC is committed to providing seamless NIN registration services, particularly for children below the age of 16.

Engr. Abisoye Coker-Odusote also expressed her gratitude to the First Lady, Her Excellency, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, for her unwavering support in advancing NIN and birth registration initiatives in Nigeria.
