Key stakeholders in Africa’s telecommunications and digital economy sectors converged on Abuja on Monday for the opening ceremony of the 7th Ordinary Session of the African Telecommunications Union (ATU) Plenipotentiary Conference, hosted by Nigeria.
The event, held at the International Conference Centre (ICC), Abuja, brought together senior government officials, telecommunications regulators, and industry leaders from across the continent to deliberate on policies aimed at accelerating Africa’s digital transformation and strengthening regional collaboration.
Among the dignitaries at the ceremony were Dr. Aminu Maida, Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC); Ms. Nonkqubela Jordan-Dyani, Director-General of South Africa’s Department of Communications and Digital Technologies; Mr. John Omo, Secretary-General of the African Telecommunications Union (ATU); Engr. Nadungu Gagare, Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy; and Engr. Abraham Oshadami, Executive Commissioner, Technical Services, NCC.
The plenipotentiary session provides a strategic platform for African nations to review the Union’s activities, set policy directions, strengthen institutional governance, and deepen cooperation in telecommunications and information and communication technologies (ICTs).
Nigeria’s hosting of the conference underscores its growing leadership role in advancing digital innovation, broadband expansion, and regional integration across Africa’s telecommunications ecosystem.
The conference is expected to produce resolutions that will shape the future of telecommunications, digital connectivity, and technology-driven economic growth across the continent.
