The Federal Government has commenced reconnaissance inspections for the newly approved multi-billion-dollar rail projects across Lagos, Kano and Kaduna states as part of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s ambitious rail modernisation and infrastructure development agenda.
The exercise is being led by the Ministry of Finance Incorporated (MOFI), in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Transportation and other key stakeholders involved in rail development across the country.
The inspections follow the recent approval by the Federal Executive Council (FEC) of approximately $3 billion for the development of three strategic rail projects: the Lagos Green Line Rail Project, the Kano Metro City Rail Project, and the Kaduna Light Rail Project.
Speaking on the development, the Chief Executive Officer of MOFI, Dr. Armstrong Takang, disclosed that the inspection team has begun visits to project locations to assess critical infrastructure requirements and ensure seamless implementation once construction activities commence.
Kaduna State was the first stop on the nationwide inspection tour, where the delegation held extensive consultations with government officials and stakeholders under the leadership of Governor Uba Sani.
According to Takang, the engagements brought together officials responsible for roads, water infrastructure, power facilities, community development initiatives and other critical public assets that could be impacted by the rail projects.
He explained that the objective of the exercise was to align all stakeholders on key implementation issues and eliminate potential obstacles that could delay project execution.
The discussions focused on addressing matters relating to right-of-way acquisition, route alignment, relocation and resettlement concerns, infrastructure encroachment, utility conflicts, track connectivity and the protection of existing public assets.
Industry observers note that early stakeholder engagement has become increasingly important in large-scale infrastructure projects, helping to reduce delays, manage community concerns and ensure efficient project delivery.
Takang expressed appreciation to Governor Uba Sani and the Kaduna State Government for their support and cooperation during the inspection exercise, describing the engagements as productive and critical to the success of the rail initiative.
He noted that the collaborative efforts of federal, state and local stakeholders would help pave the way for the rapid and hitch-free implementation of the President’s rail modernisation vision.
The rail projects form part of the Tinubu administration’s broader strategy to strengthen Nigeria’s transportation network, improve urban mobility, stimulate economic activities, reduce pressure on road infrastructure and enhance connectivity across key commercial centres.
When completed, the Lagos Green Line, Kano Metro City Rail and Kaduna Light Rail projects are expected to significantly improve public transportation services, support economic growth and create thousands of direct and indirect jobs across the project corridors.
