The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening the nation’s digital ecosystem through secure data infrastructure, sound regulatory frameworks, and international partnerships.
Speaking at a recent stakeholder engagement, Dr. Vincent Olatunji, National Commissioner and Chief Executive Officer of the NDPC, emphasized that the Commission remains focused on ensuring that Nigeria’s data protection landscape aligns with global best practices while fostering innovation and economic growth.
“Our goal is to build a secure and resilient digital environment where trust is at the center of data-driven innovation,” said Dr. Olatunji. “Data protection is not just about compliance — it’s about creating confidence in Nigeria’s digital economy and ensuring that citizens’ privacy rights are respected and upheld.”
The Commission outlined key national priorities, including the development of secure data infrastructure, the promotion of digital resilience, and the establishment of policies that balance data sovereignty, localisation, and regional integration. Dr. Olatunji noted that collaboration among government institutions, regulators, and private sector operators is critical to achieving these objectives.
“No single entity can achieve digital security in isolation,” he added. “We are fostering partnerships across sectors to promote cybersecurity best practices and ensure that both public and private organizations understand their responsibilities in protecting personal data.”
Strengthening International Cooperation
As part of its efforts to expand global cooperation, the NDPC announced ongoing discussions with the Finland Data Protection Authority to explore knowledge exchange, regulatory alignment, and joint initiatives on data governance. This partnership, Dr. Olatunji said, reflects Nigeria’s growing role in the global data protection community.
“Collaborating with international partners allows us to learn, adapt, and lead,” he stated. “We are building bridges that will enhance regulatory capacity, boost investor confidence, and position Nigeria as a trusted destination for data-driven business in Africa.”
