ENUGU, Nigeria – July 30, 2026: An innovative technology-driven learning initiative is transforming mathematics education for children in Abor community, Enugu State, with participation growing rapidly as pupils embrace a new approach to learning.
The initiative was disclosed by education advocate Alex Onyia, who revealed that children in the community recently gathered for lessons on Place Value, a foundational concept in mathematics. According to him, the overwhelming turnout has prompted organisers to introduce a daily timetable to accommodate different groups of learners.
Onyia noted that many of the participating children had previously been perceived within the community as lacking interest in education. However, he said the programme has challenged that perception by demonstrating that the right learning environment can significantly improve students’ enthusiasm and engagement.
“These are the same children the community had been saying were not serious about their studies for years. Yet, we changed that narrative after just one encounter,” he said.
He expressed confidence that, before the end of the school holiday, every participating child in the village would acquire a solid foundation in mathematics.
A notable feature of the programme is its technology-enabled teaching model. Rather than relying on a traditional classroom instructor, the children learn through interactive, pre-designed educational content, while a supervisor is present only to maintain order and provide general oversight.
According to Onyia, the approach demonstrates that access to quality learning resources can unlock children’s potential regardless of their background.
“Children are the same everywhere. The difference is not intelligence. The difference is access,” he stated.
The initiative highlights the growing role of digital learning tools in expanding access to quality education, particularly in underserved communities. Education experts have increasingly advocated the use of technology to complement classroom instruction, improve learning outcomes, and bridge educational gaps across Nigeria.
