Nigeria’s Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, has been inaugurated as a Founding Member of the AI for Good Global Commission, a newly established high-level international body convened by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) to promote trusted, inclusive and globally coordinated approaches to Artificial Intelligence (AI).
The Commission is co-chaired by Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame and Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff, while ITU Secretary-General Doreen Bogdan-Martin serves as Vice-Chair. It brings together Heads of State, industry leaders, academics and representatives of international organisations to advance a shared vision of AI that delivers benefits for all.
Reacting to the appointment, Dr. Tijani described the opportunity as an honour, noting that Nigeria’s inclusion reflects the country’s growing recognition for its efforts to build a responsible and inclusive AI ecosystem.
According to the minister, Nigeria has made significant progress through strategic investments in digital infrastructure, talent development, research, innovation and AI governance. He added that the appointment provides a platform to ensure that the perspectives and priorities of Africa and other emerging economies are represented in global discussions shaping the future of AI.
Dr. Tijani expressed optimism about working alongside fellow commissioners to develop practical solutions that harness the transformative potential of AI to accelerate sustainable development and deliver meaningful impact worldwide.
The AI for Good Global Commission is expected to play a key role in fostering international collaboration and guiding the responsible development and deployment of Artificial Intelligence for global benefit.
