Efforts to accelerate Nigeria’s digital transformation and strengthen the country’s telecommunications infrastructure received fresh attention as the Governing Board of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) met with Vice President Kashim Shettima at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
The meeting focused on advancing the National Emergency Number 112, Nigeria’s unified emergency response platform, as part of broader efforts to improve public safety, expand digital connectivity, and strengthen the telecommunications sector.
Leading the NCC delegation was the Chairman of the Governing Board, Chief Idris Olorunnimbe, who joined Vice President Shettima in discussions on how technology and robust telecommunications infrastructure can support more efficient emergency response services while contributing to the Federal Government’s digital economy agenda.
Participants at the meeting examined ways to enhance the effectiveness and accessibility of the 112 emergency number, ensuring that Nigerians can access critical emergency services more quickly and reliably, regardless of their location. The discussions also highlighted the importance of collaboration between government institutions and industry stakeholders in building resilient digital infrastructure capable of supporting essential public services.
A reliable telecommunications network remains central to the success of emergency communication systems, making continued investment in digital infrastructure a key priority. The engagement reflects the Federal Government’s commitment to harnessing technology to improve service delivery, promote innovation, and create an enabling environment for sustainable economic growth.
The meeting was attended by Mr. Gwa Tobbie Mohammed, Director of the Commission Secretariat, NCC; Mrs. Niteabai Dominic, Special Adviser (Legal) to the Executive Vice Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the NCC; Engr. Abraham Oshadami, Executive Commissioner, Technical Services; Ms. Lydia Aina, Personal Assistant to the Vice President on Governance Support; and Mr. Shuaibu Swade, Head of Projects at the NCC.
The visit forms part of ongoing collaboration between the NCC and the Presidency to drive policies and initiatives that will strengthen Nigeria’s telecommunications ecosystem and support the country’s ambition of building an inclusive, technology-driven digital economy. Through initiatives such as the National Emergency Number 112, both institutions are working to improve emergency response capabilities while enhancing the delivery of essential public services across the country.
