Nigeria has solidified its position as a powerhouse of technological innovation after a contingent of 15 outstanding students dominated the 10th Huawei Global ICT Competition Finals in Shenzhen, China, securing multiple top honors across several technical tracks.

The stellar performance has officially established Nigeria as the most successful country in the global tournament outside the host nation, China, for the third consecutive year.

Following their historic run, the studentsโ€”drawn from six premium Nigerian institutions including Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Igbinedion University Okada (IUO), University of Lagos (UNILAG), Federal University of Technology Minna (FUTMINNA), University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT), and Nasarawa State University, Keffi (NSU)โ€”were hosted in the federal capital by the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. โ€™Bosun Tijani.


A Clean Sweep Across Technical Tracks

The year-long Huawei ICT Academy programme concluded with an intensive series of challenges that saw Team Nigeria outperform competitors from over 40 countries. The final scoreboard for the Nigerian teams includes:

  • Two Grand Prizes in the Network and Innovation tracks.
  • Two First Prizes in the Cloud track.
  • One Second Prize in the Computing track.

The rigorous finals involved a demanding eight-hour laboratory simulation mapping real-world ICT architecture alongside hardware deployments utilizing cutting-edge artificial intelligence and cloud infrastructures.


Homegrown AI Solution: Testing Malaria in Under 3 Minutes

A major highlight of the global tournament was the breakthrough showcased by the Innovation Team from Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria.

The students developed “ParaVision,” a highly advanced, portable medical diagnostic tool powered by Huaweiโ€™s native AI, Cloud, and Ascend technologies. Built around the Orange Pi AIPro and the Huawei Ascend 310B4 chip, the solar-powered system is engineered to simultaneously test for malaria and intestinal parasites.

The Technical Breakthrough: The device functions fully offline, generating comprehensive, printed laboratory diagnostic reports in under three minutes without requiring any internet connectivityโ€”offering an immediate lifeline for rural healthcare delivery across Sub-Saharan Africa.

Welcoming the delegation, Dr. โ€™Bosun Tijani expressed immense pride in how young Nigerians are shifting from being mere tech consumers to globally recognized builders. He restated the Ministry’s commitment to ensuring these solutions scale beyond the lecture halls.
