A new education initiative in Enugu State is drawing attention for its integrated approach to learning, public health, and sustainable development, with advocates describing it as a model for future-ready community infrastructure in Nigeria.
During a recent visit to Enugu State, former Nigerian Vice President Prof. Yemi Osinbajo met with Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah to discuss the state’s Smart Green Schools programme, an ambitious project being implemented across all 260 wards in the state.
The initiative aims to create solar-powered, technology-enabled schools that serve not only as centres for education, but also as hubs for essential healthcare services within local communities.
Each school is designed to include an on-site clinic staffed by trained nurses, providing vaccinations, basic healthcare, and routine immunisation support for children, particularly those who may have previously lacked access to regular medical services.
Speaking on the programme, Prof. Osinbajo described investment in children as one of the most important commitments any society can make, noting that the Enugu model reflects a broader vision that connects education, sustainability, digital inclusion, and public health.
The state government has reportedly committed 32.27% of its proposed 2026 budget to education, alongside investments in teacher training, school infrastructure, and digital learning tools. Observers say the scale of the commitment signals a long-term strategy focused on human capital development and equitable access to opportunity.
Supporters of the initiative believe the Smart Green Schools programme could help address several challenges simultaneously — improving learning outcomes, expanding healthcare access in underserved communities, promoting renewable energy adoption, and strengthening resilience in rural and urban areas alike.
As governments across Africa continue exploring innovative approaches to education and development, Enugu State’s model is increasingly being viewed as an example of how integrated public investment can create broader social impact beyond the classroom.
Prof. Osinbajo commended Governor Mbah and the Enugu State Government for advancing what he described as “purposeful leadership and long-term thinking” through policies designed to improve the lives and future prospects of children and communities across the state.
