Former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, has called for national unity and decisive leadership to address Nigeria’s deepening socio-economic and governance challenges.
Speaking at a high-level political meeting held in Enugu, Obi was joined by several prominent political leaders from across the country. Among those in attendance were former governors Okwesili Nwodo of Enugu State, Achike Udenwa of Imo State, Sam Egwu of Ebonyi State, and Emeka Ihedioha. Also present were serving and former senators, including Enyinnaya Abaribe, Victor Umeh, Tony Nwoye, and Gilbert Nnaji, alongside members of the House of Representatives, State Houses of Assembly, and community leaders.
The gathering also featured political figures from outside the South-East, led by the National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and former Senate President, David Mark. Other notable attendees included former Sokoto State Governor, Rt. Hon. Aminu Tambuwal, and former Edo State Governor, Senator Oserheimen Osunbor.
Addressing the audience, Obi emphasized the urgent need for leadership capable of harnessing Nigeria’s vast human and natural resources, unifying its diverse population, and driving inclusive development. He argued that Nigeria’s difficulties are not due to a lack of potential, but rather systemic governance failures.
According to Obi, the country’s persistent poverty is the result of years of mismanagement and corruption by the political elite. He stated that Nigeria has been “looted into poverty,” adding that the current system rewards mediocrity, undermines merit, and perpetuates failed leadership. He further criticized what he described as a culture of impunity and corruption that continues to weaken public institutions.
Obi urged Nigerians and political stakeholders to make a clear choice between maintaining the status quo and pursuing fundamental reforms. Drawing from his travels across the country, including visits to internally displaced persons (IDP) camps, he noted that insecurity, hardship, and despair cut across all regions of Nigeria.
He concluded by calling for immediate action to dismantle entrenched corruption and criminality in governance, stressing that the future of the nation—and that of coming generations—depends on bold and patriotic leadership. Obi reiterated his belief that meaningful change is achievable, declaring that “a New Nigeria is possible.”
