President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has described the late Lt. General Taoreed Lagbaja as a symbol of excellence, patriotism, and dedication, as the nation bid farewell to the esteemed military officer. In a solemn statement during the burial ceremony, President Tinubu expressed deep admiration for the late General, whom he called a “soldier’s soldier” and a trusted advisor.
“Today is a solemn day for the nation and for me as Commander-in-Chief,” President Tinubu said. “We laid to rest Lt. General Taoreed Lagbaja—a General and Officer who symbolized the best of his profession. His commitment to the nation he loved was singular and undiluted.”
President Tinubu highlighted the General’s remarkable intellect, unwavering dedication, and deep care for the nation and the men and women who served under his command. “More than that, he was a man of prudent action who cared more for his nation and those who served under him than he ever did for himself. At a time when his service to the nation could mean so much, God took him home to serve in His celestial army,” the President added.
Lt. General Lagbaja, who was widely regarded as a transformative leader in Nigeria’s fight against terrorism, insurgency, and banditry, passed away while serving as Chief of Army Staff. His tenure, though brief, left a significant impact on the nation’s security landscape.
Recalling his hands-on approach to internal security operations, President Tinubu noted: “From his hands-on participation in many internal security operations, Lieutenant General Lagbaja had a clear understanding of the role of the military in securing and defending our country, its people, and their hard-won democratic institutions. He displayed uncommon valor in the discharge of his duty, earning the admiration of the rank and file for his concern for their welfare and their families.”
Addressing the late General’s family, President Tinubu expressed the nation’s gratitude for their sacrifices. “To the family of the late General Lagbaja, words can never convey our dear nation’s gratitude for his selfless service. You shared your beloved husband, father, and brother with an entire nation, allowing him to serve with honor. His sacrifices will never be forgotten.”
Lt. General Lagbaja’s life, President Tinubu emphasized, remains a source of inspiration for all members of the armed forces. “It has been said that ‘the brave never die. Their courage serves a thousand living men.’ So be it then; may the courage by which Lieutenant General Lagbaja served live in each of us,” the President concluded.
Lt. General Taoreed Lagbaja is remembered as an officer who embodied the finest ideals of patriotism and military service, leaving a lasting legacy of courage, dedication, and transformative leadership in the Nigerian Army.
