In a significant step towards tackling youth unemployment and accelerating Nigeria’s industrialisation agenda, the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) has commissioned a state-of-the-art Skills Acquisition Centre in Owerri, Imo State, to provide young Nigerians with practical, industry-relevant skills that can transform lives and stimulate economic growth.
The centre, established under the NASENI Sustainable Empowerment Programme (NSEP), is designed to equip thousands of youths, women and aspiring entrepreneurs with technical and vocational skills that will enable them to secure employment, establish businesses and contribute to Nigeria’s expanding innovation and manufacturing ecosystem.
The commissioning ceremony brought together government officials, community leaders and development stakeholders who described the initiative as a strategic investment in human capital and a practical response to the country’s growing unemployment challenge.
Speaking at the event, NASENI’s Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Khalil Halilu, said skills development remains the cornerstone of every industrialised nation and is critical to Nigeria’s journey towards becoming a globally competitive manufacturing economy.
“I was delighted to witness the commissioning of the NASENI Skills Acquisition Centre in Owerri, Imo State, under the NASENI Sustainable Empowerment Programme. This centre is more than a training facility; it is a pathway to entrepreneurship, innovation and sustainable livelihoods,” Halilu stated.
He expressed appreciation to Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma, for supporting the initiative and commended Senator Ezenwa Onyewuchi for partnering with NASENI to expand opportunities for young Nigerians through strategic investments in skills development.
According to him, the project aligns with NASENI’s 3Cs strategy—Collaboration, Creation and Commercialisation—which focuses on building local capacity, encouraging innovation and translating ideas into commercially viable products and services capable of driving national development.
A Lifeline for Young Nigerians
Beyond providing vocational training, the centre is expected to become a hub for innovation, enterprise development and technology transfer. Beneficiaries will acquire practical competencies that can help them launch businesses, secure meaningful employment and create additional jobs within their communities.
The initiative comes at a time when youth unemployment remains one of Nigeria’s most pressing socio-economic challenges. By providing market-driven skills and promoting entrepreneurship, the centre offers many young people a viable alternative to joblessness, poverty and social exclusion.
