Nigeria’s Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, has held high-level discussions with South Africa’s Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies, Solly Malatsi, on advancing Africa’s digital economy and strengthening continental cooperation on digital transformation.
The meeting took place in Cape Town and focused on strategic priorities including digital infrastructure development, connectivity, and the role of leadership in accelerating inclusive technological growth across Africa.
According to Tijani, both ministers explored ways African nations can work together to build sustainable digital ecosystems capable of driving economic development and innovation across the continent.
A major part of the discussions also centered on the role of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) in promoting inclusive digital transformation globally, particularly efforts aimed at connecting the estimated 2.2 billion people worldwide who still lack internet access.
The bilateral engagement further addressed preparations for the upcoming African Telecommunications Union (ATU) Plenipotentiary Conference, which Nigeria is scheduled to host in July.
In addition, the ministers discussed the forthcoming ITU Plenipotentiary Conference in Doha, including key elections expected to influence the future direction and leadership of the global telecommunications body.
The meeting reflects growing collaboration between African nations as governments across the continent intensify efforts to expand digital access, strengthen innovation ecosystems, and position Africa more competitively within the global digital economy.
