The Chief Executive Officer of Charles Uche Emembolu has highlighted significant outcomes from a STEM education intervention targeting public secondary schools in Nigeria, noting that structured digital access can rapidly unlock student potential in artificial intelligence and technology skills.

The update follows the deployment of the TechQuest Digital Access Programme (TQ DAP) at Ado Girls Secondary School, Onitsha, one of the smart schools under the Anambra State Government’s education modernization initiative.

Early exposure drives rapid skill development

According to Emembolu, the programme engaged approximately 750 students and 10 teachers in structured technology training designed to introduce learners with limited prior exposure to digital tools. Within weeks of implementation, participants reportedly began producing digital and AI-related work aligned with global competency benchmarks.

Some students also received international recognition through participation in the AI Youth Excellence and Sustainability (AI YES) programme, reinforcing the impact of early structured exposure to emerging technologies.

Long-term STEM initiative scaling nationwide

The TechQuest STEM Academy initiative, which began in 2015, is reported to have reached more than 100,000 young people across various interventions. The programme focuses on expanding access to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education through partnerships with governments, private sector actors, and development organizations.

Emembolu emphasized that the results observed in Anambra are not isolated, but indicative of what can be achieved when infrastructure and training are properly aligned.

Collaboration between public and private sector partners

The programme’s implementation at Ado Girls Secondary School was supported through collaboration between the Anambra State Government, Cummins Inc., and TechQuest. Officials say the partnership model combined public infrastructure, private sector support, and structured curriculum delivery to achieve the outcomes.

Broader implications for Nigeria’s talent development

Emembolu noted that Nigeria’s primary challenge is not a shortage of talent, but rather limited access to structured learning environments that can scale skills development effectively. He argued that when such access is provided, young people demonstrate rapid adaptability and high-level performance in advanced technological fields.

He added that the next phase of the initiative will focus on scaling the model through a small number of aligned partners, with the aim of expanding digital literacy and AI competency across more schools nationwide.

The programme is increasingly being viewed as part of broader efforts to position Nigerian students for participation in the global digital economy through early STEM intervention and public-private collaboration.
