The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), in partnership with private investors, has launched a new fleet of electric shuttle buses and cabs at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, marking a significant step towards sustainable aviation operations in Nigeria.
The initiative, unveiled last Friday, underscores the commitment of the FAAN management led by Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku to environmental responsibility, operational efficiency, and long-term innovation across the nation’s airports. By introducing electric mobility into airport ground transportation, FAAN is reducing carbon emissions and lowering dependence on fossil fuels, in line with global energy transition goals.
Beyond sustainability, the programme aligns with the Federal Government’s Nigeria First policy by prioritising cleaner infrastructure and supporting local innovation. It is also expected to contribute to youth empowerment by fostering new skills and opportunities within a modernising aviation ecosystem.
The deployment of electric shuttles and cabs forms part of FAAN’s broader sustainability roadmap, which includes waste recycling initiatives, the introduction of compressed natural gas (CNG) buses, energy-efficient lighting systems, and expanded use of solar power across airport facilities nationwide.
FAAN acknowledged the critical role of its partners, Possible Electric and Zuid Energies, as well as the dedication of its staff in bringing the project to fruition. According to the Authority, the initiative is designed not only to enhance passenger experience but also to protect the environment, strengthen communities, and position Nigeria as a leading force in climate-smart aviation on the African continent.
