LAGOS – The Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of MTN Nigeria, Dr. Karl Olutokun Toriola, has emphasized the need for African business leaders to strike a balance between global strategic direction and local market realities in order to achieve and sustain market leadership across the continent.
Toriola made the call while delivering a keynote session during Cohort 6 of the Global Chief Executive Officer Africa (GCEO-A) Programme at Lagos Business School, Pan-Atlantic University, on Friday, July 17, 2026.
Speaking on the theme, “Building and Sustaining Market Leadership in Africa: Local Adaptation of Global Strategy,” the MTN Nigeria chief executive shared insights from the telecommunications company’s growth journey, highlighting the strategic decisions that have enabled it to maintain its leadership position in one of Africa’s most competitive and rapidly evolving industries.
Drawing from MTN Nigeria’s experience, Toriola explained how organizations can successfully combine the strengths of a global brand with strategies tailored to the unique realities of local markets. He identified customer-centric innovation, disciplined execution, constructive regulatory engagement, digital transformation, operational resilience, and investment in local talent as critical pillars for sustainable business success.
He also encouraged senior executives to remain agile in responding to market disruptions while ensuring that global corporate strategies are effectively translated into local execution that creates lasting value for customers, shareholders, employees, and society.
Participants at the executive programme gained practical perspectives on leading large and complex organisations across diverse African markets, navigating uncertainty, and driving long-term organisational growth through innovation and effective leadership.
The session reinforced one of the core objectives of the Global Chief Executive Officer Africa Programme—developing visionary leaders capable of steering organisations through changing business landscapes while maintaining strong governance, strategic clarity, and a deep understanding of Africa’s unique operating environment.
With more than three decades of experience in the telecommunications industry, Toriola has built a distinguished career spanning multiple countries and cultures. He currently serves as Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of MTN Nigeria, as well as Vice President for MTN Francophone Africa, overseeing one of the continent’s largest telecommunications operations with approximately 80 million subscribers.
The GCEO-A Programme, organised by Lagos Business School’s Executive Education unit, is designed to equip senior executives with advanced leadership capabilities, governance frameworks, and strategic insights required to drive sustainable organisational growth across Africa. The programme also provides participants with opportunities to build high-level pan-African professional networks and strengthen their capacity to lead in an increasingly interconnected business environment.
