Nairobi, Kenya — Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Rural Electrification Agency, Abba Aliyu, has highlighted Nigeria’s progress in expanding energy access through a data-driven, least-cost electrification strategy during the Energy Access Investment Forum (EAIF) Breakfast Roundtable.
Speaking at the event in Nairobi, Aliyu emphasized that the true value of gatherings such as the Energy Access Investment Forum lies beyond formal panel sessions. According to him, meaningful engagement occurs through in-depth discussions, idea exchanges, and alignment among stakeholders across the energy ecosystem.
Aliyu shared insights into Nigeria’s approach to electrification, explaining how the country leverages data and strategic planning to determine the most efficient mix of grid extension, mini-grids, and standalone energy systems. The goal, he noted, is to deliver scalable solutions to underserved communities nationwide.
The roundtable also brought together representatives from several African countries, including Mozambique, The Gambia, Liberia, and Madagascar. Participants exchanged practical lessons and discussed common challenges in expanding electricity access, despite differing national contexts. A shared consensus emerged on the importance of structured, data-driven methodologies to improve efficiency and outcomes.
Beyond the formal sessions, Aliyu engaged with industry stakeholders and private sector representatives, exploring innovations and collaborative opportunities within the renewable energy space. Discussions included emerging concepts such as climate-smart energy solutions aimed at improving sustainability and resilience in rural communities.
He noted that continuous collaboration and knowledge-sharing remain critical to advancing the sector. “Every engagement offers valuable insights,” Aliyu said, underscoring the importance of learning from both domestic experiences and international best practices.
The EAIF continues to serve as a platform for policymakers, investors, and energy experts to strengthen partnerships and accelerate progress toward universal energy access across Africa.
