The (NDPC) has partnered with 60 other data protection authorities (DPAs) worldwide to endorse a joint international statement addressing privacy concerns linked to artificial intelligence-generated imagery.
The statement, titled “Joint Statement on AI-Generated Imagery and the Protection of Privacy,” was coordinated by the International Enforcement Cooperation Working Group of the . It reflects mounting global concerns about the misuse of AI tools capable of creating realistic images and videos of identifiable individuals.
Regulators warned that AI-powered technologies are increasingly being exploited to produce non-consensual intimate images, defamatory content and other harmful materials. Children and other vulnerable groups are considered particularly at risk. The joint statement calls on organisations developing and deploying such technologies to implement robust safeguards, promote transparency, establish effective content removal mechanisms, and ensure full compliance with applicable data protection laws.
The NDPC described its endorsement as part of Nigeria’s broader efforts to ensure the responsible development and deployment of AI technologies. The country has been advancing initiatives in this area, including the development of a National AI Strategy spearheaded by the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, .
In addition, the commission previously issued its General Application and Implementation Directive (GAID), which mandates privacy-by-design and privacy-by-default principles in the development and use of AI systems.
The National Commissioner and Chief Executive Officer of the NDPC, , stated that Compliance Audit Returns (CAR) submitted under the Nigeria Data Protection Act by major data controllers and processors would serve as a benchmark for assessing the responsible use of AI in data processing activities across the country.
