Security analyst, Col. Anthony Wonah (rtd), believes the campaign may be linked to recent security developments in the state. Specifically, the neutralization of certain high-profile bandit leaders in the northwest region, including the late Halilu Sububu, has been mentioned as a possible catalyst. Sububu, a well-known figure in the area, had connections to various interests in Zamfara, including gold mining activities.
Col. Wonah suggested that the ongoing campaign against Matawalle could be related to the impact of recent security operations on influential networks in the region. He added that the focus on undermining Matawalle’s image might be an attempt to distract from more pressing governance issues in Zamfara State.
