The Comms Avenue Commences the Fourth Batch of the Comms Mentoring Program with 28 Mentors from Unilever, UBA Ghana, APO Group, Global Media Alliance and more

The Comms Avenue (https://TheCommsAvenue.com), a capacity-building and networking platform for communications professionals across Africa and beyond, has announced the line up of mentors and mentees for the fourth batch of the Comms Mentoring Program (CMP) which will begin on Saturday 19th March.

Launched in August 2020, the CMP was created to bridge the mentoring gap between senior and younger professionals in the African communications industry. Through the previous three batches, senior communications professionals from Ghana, Nigeria, Zimbabwe, Egypt and the United States have served as mentors and have dedicated their time to nurturing upcoming professionals in the industry.

For the fourth batch, The Comms Avenue has taken things up a notch by doubling the impact of the CMP across the continent. After a thorough selection process, 41 mentees from Ghana, Nigeria, Eswatini, Kenya and South Africa were selected to go through the six-week mentoring program.

Speaking about the fourth batch of the CMP, Adedoyin Jaiyesimi, Co-Founder of The Comms Avenue said, “We started the CMP as a pilot to see if we could create a seamless framework which senior communications professionals across the world could plug into to share their knowledge and guide younger professionals. After the success of the previous batches which includes job promotions and increased career growth for our mentees, we have set a goal to impact 100 young professionals across Africa through the CMP in 2022.”

The Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Prof Isa Ali Pantami, represented by Head, Corporate Liaison and Advocacy Unit, National Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics, Babangida Abdullahi Gilo, re-echoed this at the launch of Rated-Artisan Services Limited; a wholly-owned Nigerian software solutions provider.

While indicating that the initiative underpins the Federal Government’s target of achieving 95% digital literacy by 2030, he applauded the efforts of the Start-up Digital Company for the products which offer an ecosystem that brings ultimate convenience in service delivery with the proprietary intelligent enterprise as well as e-Commerce applications.

The Director-General, National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Kashifu Inuwa, also represented at the event by the Acting Coordinator of the Office for Nigerian Digital Innovation, Yakubu Musa, reaffirmed that the Agency remains committed to supporting the development of the indigenous solutions that will address the Nation’s prevailing challenges.

“It is often said that it is where there are challenges that you have opportunities, and it is where there are opportunities that wealth is created. Today we are here to celebrate Rated Artisan for identifying a challenge and exploring the opportunities presented by the challenge to create wealth for Nigerians.”

He expressed belief that it will create an enabling environment for growth, attraction, and protection of investments in startups.

The Hon. Minister of Mines and Steel Development, Arc Olamilekan Adegbite has stated that the roles being played by the National Metallurgical Development Centre (NMDC) and the Nigerian Institute of Mining and Geosciences (NIMG), Jos would help achieve the desired growth in the Sector.

Adegbite stated this over the weekend during his working visit to the two organizations under his Ministry in Jos, Plateau State.

The Minister who who expressed satisfaction with the progress made by the two (2) Agencies, said he was not surprised by the achievements recorded since the assumption to office of the two Chief Executives, pointing out that results easily come when competent hands take charge of critical Agencies of government.
He referred to them as experts who have done a lot of researches in different areas relating to minerals and metals sector.

On the contributions of NIMG to the economy, Adegbite disclosed that the Agency is currently training a lot of people in gemstones identification, cutting, polishing and so on, which according to him, would enable Nigerians make use of the gemstones that are in quantum in the country rather than exporting them in the raw forms.

Some of the faculties in the School are also part of the jewelry making training that is ongoing in Abuja, adding that they are also a repository of knowledge and technical expertise on how different gemstones can be identified, cut, polished and made into jewelry.

Speaking on the positive impacts the NMDC has played, the Minister said that any Nation that desired to be independent and wants to make progress, technologically, must have its own steel production.

“This Centre is a technological hub without which Nigeria cannot make it. A lot has been done here and a lot more needs to be done, where they are today is no mean feat, they have done so much and they can also do more”, he noted.

He cited an MoU signed with the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON), on local production of armaments for the Nigerian armed forces as a step in the right direction.

According to him, “DICON had to look inward during Covid-19 restrictions and found out that what they have been importing into the country, could be done even better locally in NMDC, Jos.

He noted that the two Agencies need more funds to achieve their mandates and ensure Nigeria takes its pride of place in the global minerals and metals sector. He promised to address the funding issue before the current administration winds down.

in his opening remarks, the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of NMDC, Prof Linus Asuquo said the activities of the Agency are crucial in value additions and development of processes for the entire processing chain; from exploration to extraction and to fabrication.

He stated that the mandate of the Centre vested the responsibility of the conduct of research and development work in minerals and metallurgy in all their ramifications in the Centre.

Asuquo said significant progress has been recorded since the inception of the current administration most especially in renewing infrastructure and building capacity which is aimed at bringing the Centre at par with similar Research and Development establishments in other developing countries such as Mintek in South Africa, CMRDI in Egypt and even Mefos in Sweden.

He appreciated the dynamic leadership of the Hon. Minister for the acquisition and supply of new state-of-the-art equipment. These equipment according to him, enhanced the Centre’s capacity for minerals identification, processing, metallurgical research and analysis as well the conduct of forensic science.

The DG however pointed out that a lot still needs to be done to succeed in Research and Development works for the diversification of the economy.

He appealed for Ministry’s continuous support to the Centre in its efforts at attaining the level where it will not only contribute effectively to government’s objective of transforming the minerals and metals sector into major contributors to GDP but also rely on itself by generating the income it needs to fund its expenses and research work

Earlier in his address, the Director General and Chief Executive Officer, NIMG, Prof Bolaji Hassan said the mission of the agency is to be an international centre of excellence in the training of manpower and the conduct of research in the exploration and exploitation of minerals for national development.

Hassan said NIMG is committed to the ideal of resuscitating Mining and Minerals processing Engineering and Skills Acquisition in Nigeria.

“To achieve these laudable programs, we must be proactive in developing our human capacity requirements to bridge the gap through training, research and skill acquisition, short courses specifically tailored to meet the present and future needs of our Mining, Minerals and Metal Sector”, he further explained.

He disclosed that the agency is committed to rendering professional knowledge and expertise through short duration courses, to enable them train and equip Nigerians with skills in specialized areas such as: Lapidary, Gemstone Cutting & Polishing; Jewelry Making, Basic Mining Practice for Miners and Quarry Management among others.

He solicited for more funding to assist the agency develop its infrastructure and deliver on its mandate.

The Hon. Minister of Mines and Steel Development, Arc Olamilekan Adegbite has reiterated the Federal Government’s resolve to support Artisanal and Small Scale Miners to access funds that will increase their productivity.

The Minister made this known over the weekend during his inspection of the ongoing construction of the Gemstones Market in Ojoo, Akinyele Local Government Area of Oyo State.

He encouraged miners to come together as different Cooperative Groups to access funds set aside to support their activities. He said the Miners can access loan from 2million to N100million payable in 15years at 5% interest rate per annum.

Adegbite said a loan of N2million and below would only require a guarantor while a miner seeking to access a loan above the sum of N2million would need to provide required collateral.

“I realized that a lot of people could not access the money because of collateral and I advised that it be reduced so that those who need small loan of not more than N2million can access without a collateral but a guarantor of level 14 and above in the civil service,”, he further explained.

On the construction of the gemstones market, the Minister said gemstone market in Ojoo is where the gemstone would be identified and graded, cut, polished and ready to be made into jewelry.

He said the people being trained in gemstones design in Abuja would populate Ibadan gemstones market as well as the Gold Souk in Kano since they would be working on jewelries and gemstones.

He however noted that the gemstones mining is not limited to Oyo State as he pointed out other States where gemstones could be found to include Taraba, Plateau and Abuja among others.

The Minister re-emphasized that what the government is doing with the six (6) regional projects are demonstration of possibilities for investors as he encouraged them to take advantage of it and invest not only in mining but in processing as well.
On the operationalization of the regional projects, he said the government would not be involved in the running of the projects.

In his words, “by the time these projects are completed, we are looking at the system of PPP, where we have facility management and plant management systems in place who will run this projects and of course there will be recourse to government as appropriate but we don’t want to get government involved in the running of the six clusters”, he added.

Adegbite said sustainability is key in running of the projects as he explained that the government would give them to those who would run them profitably and generate revenue for government. “It’s going to be a win-win business, whoever runs any of the projects will make money from it, will make money for government and also enhance the value of what is produced in that particular neighborhood”, he emphasized.

Earlier in his remarks, the General Secretary of Miners Association of Nigeria(MAN), Mr Dele Ayanleke commended the Federal Government for the establishment of the six (6) regional projects.

Ayanleke said the project would improve ASM productivity, boost their confidence and discourage export of raw ore.

He called on Miners to take advantage of the 5% interest rate loan made available by the Federal Government to procure necessary equipment that would make them perform optimally.

In today’s world, people or many Christians try to mistake God and his ability to heal people (miracle). People tend to assume that it is all about faith, but majority of Christians have this misconception of faith.

They (these set of Christians) mostly mistake stupidity or foolishness for faith. Many people have come to assume foolishness to he faith, they will not do anything to alleviate the situation only keep it for God. You don’t need to use olive oil to put in an eye that has a cataract or glaucoma, the best is to head to hospital and see ophthalmologist.

Hosea chapter 6, my people are suffering for lack of knowledge. We have to know the practical Christianity. A pastor slumped and died on the altar and people assumed that God called him home, but he might have died of cardiac arrest. He must have had that sign. We must always try to demarcate stupidity from faith. You don’t mock God, you must always do the right thing and God is an orderly God.

A stitch in time saves nine. We have miracles and we believe in miracle and we have seen the manifestation of God in various ways but also we must do our own part as human. If we are sick we go to the hospital.

Mindset, we must change our mindset and the way we see things and it will help us. I am sorry many Christians are becoming very stupid and foolish in mistaking faith and reality. The earlier we start seeing things in the proper perspective the better for us all. We must do the right thing.

You don’t need faith to cure sugar issues and some things that is related to sugar, the proper thing a Christian should do is to avoid sugar, junk foods, soda etc. These are precursors of diabetes and other things. The practical Christianity is to avoid these first and then hope in God for delivery.

Mark 5, 25 – 34 takes about the issue of woman with the issue of blood. This lady has spent all that she had on treatment yet nothing was done or no sign of abating. She was still bleeding, mind you she has spent and did a lot of consultation maybe doctors and healers , now this woman faith grew, she didn’t even wait for Jesus to lay his hands on her… He faith was so robust that she believed in herself that if she can touch only the tip of the robes that would be done.. And she did that and she was made whole…. Remember she did the needful in all ramifications be it physical or spiritual.

Now, today’s Christian will not do anything, will not go to hospital, will not take medication, only run to church, God isn’t like that. You can’t bamboozle God that wait.

A lot of misconception today in the Christiandom is been propagates by false doctrine. We must try and do the right thing.

In the book of John chapter 5 vs 1- 3, here we are looking at the pool of Bethsaida, there was a place where people are and Jesus healed. And mind you the pool has a reputation of healing folks as of then. The folks there go there to get healed. They sick people wait for their turns to heal because an angel will descend and trouble the water to heal people. Remember that a man that has sickness for 38 yrs was there looking for healing, he has been around for a whole 38 yrs and that was Jesus time to step in and healed.

You can see that the man has done all things humanly possible to get healing until Jesus brought his spiritual manifestation. The key here is that there is need to do the needful before you still call God for miracle…

God said that he will bless the work of thy hands. How can you as a Christian expect God to bless your works when you haven’t shown dedication and commitment to whatever you do. You should know that whatever you do, do it deligently . We must show commitment in whatever we set ourselves to do. Bible is clear on that.

The holy books said, show me a man who is deligent in whatever he does, he will feed in the present of princes and princess. So be dedicated then you pray to God. You can’t stay in the house and expect God to bless you. That is more of stupidity and not faith. We must get these things clear.

God still answer prayers but it depends on the faith. You must have shown your faith and also some everything possible as a human. If we want God heal us and give us good health we must eat healthy. We must try to eat right and then leave the rest for God.

Faith without good work is useless, we must always do the good work before we throw these things to God.

For Prof. Umar Garba Danbatta, the Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), the 2022 International Women’s Day became a day for acknowledging his role in women empowerment in the country, as numerous beneficiaries of his efforts decorated him with awards of recognition.

The event was a public lecture organized by the Kano Civil Society Forum (KCSF), an umbrella body of over 200 women’s rights groups, in conjunction with the Aminu Kano Centre for Democratic Studies of Bayero University, to mark the 2022 International Women Day (IWD), which Danbatta chaired yesterday in Kano State.

However, while Danbatta, according the programme event, was to present awards to various women who have distinguished themselves in different endeavours, little did he know that the beneficiaries of various youth entrepreneur skills and other empowerment progarmmes of both the Commission and his personal charity foundation, Danbatta Charity Foundation (NCF), planned an ambush to present their own prizes to him.

In the same vein, the CDS, Mumbayya House and KCSF also presented their award of recognition to the EVC, leaving the NCC boss visibly surprised.

Earlier, Danbatta told the gathering that he is a strong believer of the potentiality of womenfolk and he has never hesitated to entrust responsibilities to his female colleagues because he has always found them to be very reliable when assigned with official tasks.
 
“I am a very, very strong believer of the tremendous potentiality of members of the womenfolk. And they do it with such finesse, not with any aggression like men do. Women, by their very nature, are tender. They attend to whatever they are doing with finesse in a very careful manner. And they deliver on targets given to them before deadlines,” he emphasised.

Speaking further, the EVC said, he has never given an assignment to any of the women in the Commission, which was not delivered before the deadline, “to the extent that, ladies and gentlemen, I am always comfortable to have a woman chair committee, whenever there is a need”.

Danbatta, who said that respect for women is natural to him, as it is one of the values his late mum inculcated in him, expressed his delight about the fact that women are now working their way to the top echelon of responsibilities in the country.

“We now have women in every sector of the economy, in every area of human endeavour. We have them as engineers, medical doctors, seasoned administrators, name it. In the commission I am heading we have 4 female directors. The Director of Zonal Operations is a woman. The Director of Policy competition, and Economic Analysis is a woman, and also a lawyer.  Equally, the Director of Legal and Regulatory Services is a woman, and lastly the Director of Projects.  And I am not saying this out of any disrespect for the womenfolk. Far from that. Importantly, more than 50% of the workforce in NCC is made up of women,” Danbatta informed his audience.
 
The NCC boss further stated that the Commission is particularly committed to bridging the gender-oriented digital divide. Hence, the NCC has put, in the front burner, the need to expose girls and young women to more opportunities in the digital ecosystem, in line with the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) resolution 70, which advocates gender mainstreaming and promotion of gender equality, as well as the empowerment of women through information and communications technology (ICT).

The EVC later commissioned the e-library of the Aminu Kano Centre for Democratic Studies, an arm of Bayero University, which was donated by the Commission in line with the Federal Government’s commitment to the promotion of digital economy programmes.

Nigeria has been described as one of the biggest democracy’s in Africa. With over 200 million Nigerians yearning for better governance. The opportunity to have a paradigm shift has presented itself as the country is tilting towards 2023, a year that there will be change of GOVERNANCE. Having seen this, Dr. Solomon Uchenna wining from Ikwo Local Government Area of Ebony State in the South Eastern part of the country has declared his intention to be the Nigerian president using Accord National Party as a platform.

During his declaration in Abuja on the 10th March 2023, it was said that the Nigerian Presidency is the turn of the Igbo’s to present their candidate. Based on the two principles of equity and rotational government, there is need for political parties to give qualified Igbo candidates preferential treatment and right of first refusal.

The Hon. Minister of Mines and Steel Development, Arc Olamilekan Adegbite has stated that the roles being played by the National Metallurgical Development Centre (NMDC) and the Nigerian Institute of Mining and Geosciences (NIMG), Jos would help achieve the desired growth in the Sector.

Adegbite stated this over the weekend during his working visit to the two organizations under his Ministry in Jos, Plateau State.

The Minister who who expressed satisfaction with the progress made by the two (2) Agencies, said he was not surprised by the achievements recorded since the assumption to office of the two Chief Executives, pointing out that results easily come when competent hands take charge of critical Agencies of government.
He referred to them as experts who have done a lot of researches in different areas relating to minerals and metals sector.

On the contributions of NIMG to the economy, Adegbite disclosed that the Agency is currently training a lot of people in gemstones identification, cutting, polishing and so on, which according to him, would enable Nigerians make use of the gemstones that are in quantum in the country rather than exporting them in the raw forms.


Some of the faculties in the School are also part of the jewelry making training that is ongoing in Abuja, adding that they are also a repository of knowledge and technical expertise on how different gemstones can be identified, cut, polished and made into jewelry.


Speaking on the positive impacts the NMDC has played, the Minister said that any Nation that desired to be independent and wants to make progress, technologically, must have its own steel production.


“This Centre is a technological hub without which Nigeria cannot make it. A lot has been done here and a lot more needs to be done, where they are today is no mean feat, they have done so much and they can also do more”, he noted.
He cited an MoU signed with the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON), on local production of armaments for the Nigerian armed forces as a step in the right direction.

According to him, “DICON had to look inward during Covid-19 restrictions and found out that what they have been importing into the country, could be done even better locally in NMDC, Jos.

He noted that the two Agencies need more funds to achieve their mandates and ensure Nigeria takes its pride of place in the global minerals and metals sector. He promised to address the funding issue before the current administration winds down.

in his opening remarks, the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of NMDC, Prof Linus Asuquo said the activities of the Agency are crucial in value additions and development of processes for the entire processing chain; from exploration to extraction and to fabrication.

He stated that the mandate of the Centre vested the responsibility of the conduct of research and development work in minerals and metallurgy in all their ramifications in the Centre.

Asuquo said significant progress has been recorded since the inception of the current administration most especially in renewing infrastructure and building capacity which is aimed at bringing the Centre at par with similar Research and Development establishments in other developing countries such as Mintek in South Africa, CMRDI in Egypt and even Mefos in Sweden.

He appreciated the dynamic leadership of the Hon. Minister for the acquisition and supply of new state-of-the-art equipment. These equipment according to him, enhanced the Centre’s capacity for minerals identification, processing, metallurgical research and analysis as well the conduct of forensic science.

The DG however pointed out that a lot still needs to be done to succeed in Research and Development works for the diversification of the economy.

He appealed for Ministry’s continuous support to the Centre in its efforts at attaining the level where it will not only contribute effectively to government’s objective of transforming the minerals and metals sector into major contributors to GDP but also rely on itself by generating the income it needs to fund its expenses and research work

Earlier in his address, the Director General and Chief Executive Officer, NIMG, Prof Bolaji Hassan said the mission of the agency is to be an international centre of excellence in the training of manpower and the conduct of research in the exploration and exploitation of minerals for national development.

Hassan said NIMG is committed to the ideal of resuscitating Mining and Minerals processing Engineering and Skills Acquisition in Nigeria.

“To achieve these laudable programs, we must be proactive in developing our human capacity requirements to bridge the gap through training, research and skill acquisition, short courses specifically tailored to meet the present and future needs of our Mining, Minerals and Metal Sector”, he further explained.

He disclosed that the agency is committed to rendering professional knowledge and expertise through short duration courses, to enable them train and equip Nigerians with skills in specialized areas such as: Lapidary, Gemstone Cutting & Polishing; Jewelry Making, Basic Mining Practice for Miners and Quarry Management among others.

The current efforts of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to facilitate deployment of the Fifth Generation (5G) technology will further catalyse the innovativeness and creativity of the entertainment industry in Nigeria and raise its productivity and contribution to the gross domestic product (GDP) to new levels. The Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of NCC, Prof. Umar Danbatta, has said.

Danbatta, stated this in a keynote address delivered at the Nollywood Economic Outlook (NEO 2022) organised in Lagos recently, and well-attended by Nollywood personalities and other critical stakeholders in the creative industry.

The organisers of the NEO 2022 forum also presented the Award of “Best Agency in Government Sustainable and Development Agenda” to the Commission for its role in facilitating digital connectivity to fast-track Nigeria’s economic growth as well as accelerate attainment of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in Nigeria.


Speaking on the theme: “Leveraging 5G Technology for the Advancement of Creative Industry,” Danbatta, who was represented by the NCC’s Head of Media and Public Relations, Grace Ojougboh, said 5G technology will disrupt the media business models in the creative industry just as he emphasised that need for practitioners in the creative industry to leverage the power of 5G technology to expand the frontiers of the industry for the next phase of its growth.

“The 5G will revolutionize how content is produced, distributed, and consumed, unlocking existing technologies for wider audiences and enabling a new wave of applications. It will also enable broadcasters to transmit footage back to their base within a short period of time, thus creating more coverage opportunities,” Danbatta said.

He explained that 5G technology networks will transform businesses leading to higher productivity improvements via real-time flow of information. “Consequently, this will permit the optimization of business functions and creation of new value chains for customers through advances in Internet-based web technology and search engines. This is expected to lead to the development and pervasiveness of Over-the-top (OTT) services,” he said.

Danbatta further stated that running 5G network, over-the-top (OTT) platforms and applications will also offer video content over the internet as against the traditional cable or satellite television. This, he said, was because technologies enabled by 5G will utilize novel and innovative channels to enhance the experience of viewers.
“So, for the creative industry, 5G will also enable delivery of high-quality content direct to consumers by the broadcast industry at the touch of a button. Accordingly, it will offer users seamless experience when they stream videos on mobile devices (Smartphones and tablets) and web televisions that use solutions such as Chromecast, Apple TV and Amazon Fire TV, as well as Smart TVs,” the EVC said.


Danbatta told the audience that as demands for high-quality content and streaming increase, 5G connectivity presents the perfect opportunity to push the OTT viewer experience to the next level. He said with super-fast 5G download speeds up to 10 times faster than the current networks and therefore, lower latency that will improve viewers experience of video on demand and make them to enjoy highly reliable services.

The 5G technology will allow the creative industry to better understand future requirements, explore new creative formats, build new mobile video capabilities, pursue strategic partnerships, and assess their data collection practices and database requirements.

“Information and Communications Technology has already made the world a global village due to its ubiquitous connection to remote locations across the globe. The 5G technology capabilities will make the world even smaller, thus enabling easy distribution of content across the globe in real time,” he stated.

Danbatta concluded by stating that 5G technology is set to redefine the way people live and work and will usher the much-talked-about Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) with its promise of a rapid social and economic development of the country.
Danbatta used the opportunity of the event to intimate the audience of the policy and regulatory efforts of the government, through the Federal Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy as well as the NCC, which have culminated in the licensing of spectrum resources for the deployment of 5G network in the country.
He asserted that disruptive innovations shaping the future of the world, such as; Mobile Broadband, Internet of Things, Cloud Computing, Autonomous and Near-Autonomous Vehicles, Artificial Intelligence, Augmented Reality, Block-Chain Technology, Robotics and Quantum Computing and more, are pivoted on telecommunications, especially the 5G technology.

Earlier, the Host of the programme and Executive Secretary, Board of Trustees of Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), Sunny McDon , said there had been all sorts of predictions about the introduction of 5G technology and the sheer number of devices that will become connected through its introduction in Nigeria. He therefore advocated a focus on the impact on the creative industry, businesses and Nigeria’s socio-economic development.

The Lagos State Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mrs. Uzamat Akinbile-Yussuf, who was represented at the event by Mr. Idowu Johnson, spoke on “Imperatives for Building Lasting Structures for the Sustenance of the Creative Industry.”
