Nigeria has reinforced its ambition to become a leading innovation and digital economy hub following the establishment of a World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) office in Abuja—one of only seven WIPO offices globally.
The development has been described as a significant endorsement of Nigeria’s growing influence in the global innovation landscape, particularly in the fields of technology, creativity, and digital enterprise.
The Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Bosun Tijani, described the establishment of the WIPO office as a “strong vote of confidence” in Nigeria’s evolving role as a key player in the global digital and creative economy.
According to him, the presence of the World Intellectual Property Organization in Abuja signals deeper international recognition of Nigeria’s innovation potential and the importance of strengthening collaboration with global institutions shaping the future of intellectual property and digital transformation.
The Minister recently hosted the Director-General of the World Intellectual Property Organization, Daren Tang, and his delegation in Abuja. The high-level engagement built on earlier discussions held during a ministerial summit on the margins of the International Telecommunication Union Council, where both parties reaffirmed their commitment to advancing innovation and digital development.
The latest meeting focused on strengthening Nigeria’s intellectual property ecosystem and unlocking greater value from the country’s growing base of innovators, entrepreneurs, and creative talent.
A major highlight of the discussions was the role of intellectual property as a tool for economic empowerment. Both parties explored how improved IP frameworks can better support technology entrepreneurs, creators, and young digital professionals, enabling them to transform ideas into viable and scalable businesses.
The Minister emphasized that Nigeria’s innovation ecosystem continues to expand rapidly, driven by a young and dynamic population with strong entrepreneurial capacity. He noted that strengthening intellectual property awareness and protection will be essential in ensuring that innovators are able to fully benefit from their ideas and creations.
As part of ongoing reforms, the Federal Government reiterated its commitment to deepening collaboration with WIPO to expand access to intellectual property education and protection mechanisms. The goal, according to the Ministry, is to extend these opportunities beyond urban innovation hubs and ensure broader grassroots inclusion.
Officials believe that by strengthening IP systems and awareness, Nigeria can unlock new opportunities for job creation, economic growth, and global competitiveness—particularly within the technology and creative sectors.
The establishment of the WIPO office in Abuja is expected to serve as a strategic bridge between Nigeria and the global innovation ecosystem, further positioning the country as a rising hub for digital transformation and creative enterprise in Africa.
