Tinubu’s UK Visit: Nigeria Moves to Secure UK Degrees Locally Through Coventry Partnership

London, United Kingdom — As part of President ’s official visit to the United Kingdom, Nigeria is advancing a major education partnership aimed at expanding access to internationally accredited degrees within the country.

Nigeria’s Minister of State for Education, , confirmed that discussions are already yielding progress, particularly with . The collaboration is expected to establish a Nigerian campus that will offer students the opportunity to earn fully accredited UK degrees without traveling abroad.

According to Alausa, the initiative is designed to address long-standing challenges faced by Nigerian families who often send their children overseas in search of quality education. He noted that the new arrangement would significantly reduce costs while allowing students to remain closer to home.

The proposed campus is expected to be located in , within , and will offer both Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes. Academic areas will include STEMM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and Medicine), Business, and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET).

Admissions are projected to begin between the third and fourth quarters of 2026, pending regulatory approvals.

Officials say the initiative forms part of broader efforts by the Tinubu administration to strengthen Nigeria’s human capital development by equipping students with globally competitive skills. The partnership is also expected to support innovation, boost workforce capacity, and contribute to long-term national economic growth.

The development underscores the administration’s commitment to bringing global educational opportunities closer to Nigerian students while reducing the financial and social burden associated with studying abroad.
