The recently concluded South East Maths Olympiad Grand Finale has once again highlighted the growing influence of South-Eastern Nigeria in STEM education and intellectual development.
Three exceptional students from Evergreen School, Enugu, who topped the Junior Category, represent more than individual brilliance—they embody a culture that places strong value on mathematics, science, and academic excellence. At such a young age, these students have already completed engineering mathematics materials back-to-back, worked through the Lacombe mathematics series, and even covered aspects of the German mathematics syllabus. Their confidence in tackling complex mathematical problems shows how deeply rigorous learning is being embedded early in the region.
Their success also reflects the broader goal of the 2026 South East Maths Olympiad, a major regional competition designed to nurture talent and strengthen STEM education across Nigeria’s five South-Eastern states.
The inaugural competition, organized by Alex Onyia and partners, attracted over 11,500 participants from primary to senior secondary schools across Abia, Enugu, Imo, Ebonyi, and Anambra states. The grand finale took place in Enugu on March 7, 2026, with more than ₦10 million in prizes awarded to students and teachers.
Key highlights of the Olympiad include:
- Purpose: To nurture mathematical talent, promote critical thinking, and build a pipeline of genius-level children across the region.

- Primary (Primary 1–6)
- Junior Secondary (JSS 1–3)
- Senior Secondary (SS 1–3)
- Competition Structure: Preliminary rounds held across local government areas, followed by a computer-based testing (CBT) phase, leading to the grand finale.
- Prizes:
- Senior Category: ₦5 million
- Junior Category: ₦3 million
- Primary Category: ₦2 million
- Teachers: ₦1 million each for teachers of winning students, plus additional bonuses
The initiative goes beyond competition—it represents a deliberate push to shift the region’s focus toward intellectual capital, innovation, and STEM excellence. By investing in young minds and creating platforms that reward deep learning and analytical thinking, the South-East continues to strengthen its reputation as a hub for academic excellence in Nigeria.
