Abuja, Nigeria — A 2025 environmental cleanliness assessment has identified only nine states as meeting the benchmark for acceptable sanitation standards across Nigeria.
According to the report released by Statisense under the Clean Up Nigeria, 2025 initiative, the states that scored above the 45 percent cleanliness threshold are Akwa Ibom, Enugu, Ebonyi, Anambra, Bauchi, Plateau, Cross River, Lagos, and Abuja City. Akwa Ibom ranked highest overall, followed by Enugu and Ebonyi.
The assessment indicates that the remaining 28 states, including areas of the Federal Capital Territory outside Abuja City, were rated as unclean after failing to meet the minimum score required.
The findings highlight persistent challenges in environmental sanitation and waste management across much of the country, while also pointing to regional differences in performance. Analysts say the results underscore the need for stronger policies, enforcement, and public participation in cleanliness and environmental health initiatives nationwide.
The report categorized states by geopolitical zones, noting representation from the South-South, South-East, South-West, North-Central, and the Federal Capital Territory among those rated clean.
