President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Sunday attended the 2025 Adamu Orisha Play, popularly known as the Eyo Festival, held in Lagos, marking the return of the iconic cultural event after an eight-year hiatus.
The festival, one of Lagos’ most significant traditional celebrations, drew dignitaries, traditional leaders, and residents as the famed white-clad Eyo masquerades paraded major streets of the city.
Speaking at the event, Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, described the occasion as a proud moment for the state and its people, noting that the Eyo Festival remains a strong symbol of Lagos’ identity and shared heritage.
“It is a proud moment for us as Lagosians to witness the return of this historic celebration after eight years. The Eyo Festival is one of the clearest expressions of who we are as a people. Seeing the Eyos glide through our streets in white reminds us of the deep roots and shared values that bind our city together,” Sanwo-Olu said.
The Lagos State Government said this year’s festival was particularly significant as it honoured four notable personalities who played key roles in the development of Lagos State and Nigeria. The honourees included Mama Abibatu Mogaji, mother of President Tinubu; former Military Governor of Lagos State, Brigadier-General Mobolaji Johnson; former civilian governor, Alhaji Lateef Jakande; and former governor, Chief Michael Otedola.
Governor Sanwo-Olu highlighted Mama Abibatu Mogaji’s legacy, describing her as a symbol of strength and leadership among Lagos women.
According to the state government, the festival also underscored the importance of preserving cultural heritage while pursuing modern development.
Sanwo-Olu expressed appreciation to the Oba of Lagos, His Royal Majesty Oba Rilwanu Akiolu, traditional institutions, and the families of the honourees for their roles in sustaining the centuries-old tradition.
“Lagos will continue to honour its past while building its future. The Eyo Festival remains a powerful reminder of the balance between our history and our aspirations as a global city,” the governor added.
The Lagos State Government reaffirmed its commitment to promoting cultural tourism and safeguarding indigenous traditions as part of efforts to strengthen the state’s cultural and economic landscape.
