The Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology, Chief Uche Geoffrey Nnaji, has highlighted the critical role of Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI) as vital tools for economic transformation and diversification in Nigeria. He emphasized that science and technology are key drivers of agricultural sector productivity, wealth creation, poverty alleviation, and food security across the country.
Chief Nnaji made these remarks today during the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Ministry of Innovation, Science, and Technology and Flux Carbon Pte Limited, held in Abuja. Speaking at the event, he noted, “This agreement marks a significant step in our concerted efforts to address one of the most pressing challenges of our time – food security.”
The Minister underscored that agriculture is the backbone of Nigeria’s economy, contributing approximately 25% to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and providing livelihoods for more than 70% of the populace. However, the sector faces immense challenges, including climate change and land degradation, which are compounded by the recent surge in food prices across the nation. “These challenges underscore the urgent need for innovative and sustainable solutions,” he added.
Chief Nnaji stated that the signing of the MoU symbolizes the government’s commitment to collaborating with both local and international partners to achieve sustainable agricultural and economic growth. “Today’s partnership with Flux Carbon Pte Limited is a testament to our dedication to increasing crop yields through innovative methods, lowering costs for farmers, and promoting sustainable agricultural practices in Nigeria,” he explained.
He further remarked that by focusing on sustainable agriculture, the Ministry is not only addressing the immediate needs of food security but also creating jobs and fostering socio-economic development. The Minister expressed appreciation to all partners for their unwavering commitment to achieving economic prosperity, environmental sustainability, and social well-being for all Nigerians.
In her remarks, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mrs. Esuabana Nko Asanye, stated that the Ministry is making a significant impact on the global innovation system by enhancing research outputs to meet the nation’s needs. “Technology is the bedrock of development for any nation. The signing of this MoU will improve agricultural yields and enhance food security in Nigeria,” she emphasized.
Earlier, the Chief Executive Officer of Flux Carbon Pte Limited, Mr. Sam Daniel, said the partnership aligns with the organization’s commitment to harnessing innovative solutions to tackle global challenges, particularly in the areas of climate change and food security. “By collaborating with the Government of Nigeria through the Ministry, our company aims to explore the potentials of Enhanced Rock Weathering (ERW) to boost food security and contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Nigeria,” he stated.
