he Governor of Lagos State addressed residents today, reaffirming his commitment to the state’s prosperity amid growing concerns about potential protests against what some describe as “bad government.”
In his address, the Governor acknowledged the challenges facing Lagosians but questioned the efficacy of protests in solving these issues. He emphasized that protests aimed at changing the government through non-constitutional means are troubling and unlikely to yield immediate benefits such as lower food prices or economic growth.
“While the intentions behind the protests may be noble, they could potentially undo the modest gains we’ve made,” he said. “Significant efforts are underway to alleviate our people’s pain and pave the way to lasting prosperity.”
Highlighting recent government actions, the Governor noted that President Tinubu has signed a new minimum wage into law and that student loans are being disbursed to ease financial burdens. Additionally, local governments now have financial autonomy to enhance governance efficiency.
The Governor also mentioned innovative measures to tackle the foreign exchange crisis, including selling crude oil to local refineries in Naira to save $7.9 billion annually and strengthen the currency. The Presidential Initiative on CNG is attracting private investments as well.
“We need patience for the benefits of these economic reforms to blossom,” he stated. “Protests can’t achieve in days what economic reforms can in weeks and months.”
In Lagos, the state government has launched EKOCARES to cushion the effects of economic reforms, offering discount markets, reduced transport costs, and free medical care. The Governor also highlighted increased bursaries and scholarships for Lagos students, free education for new elementary students, and higher wages for workers.
Reflecting on the tragic events of the EndSARS protest in 2020, the Governor warned against a repeat of the destruction and loss that ensued when the protest was hijacked by violent elements.
“We will NOT allow history to repeat itself,” he declared. “During the protests, we saw the destruction of valuable properties and institutions, which set us back economically and socially.”
To ensure safe and peaceful expression, the Governor announced that the Police have designated Gani Fawehinmi Park and Peace Park for protests, where security will be provided to protect citizens and prevent chaos.
“Our goal is a peaceful and prosperous Lagos,” he concluded. “Let’s unite, embrace dialogue, and build a peaceful, prosperous Lagos. Our strength lies in our unity, and our future depends on maintaining peace and stability.”
