The Managing Director/CEO of Nigerian Communications Satellite Ltd, Jane Egerton-Idehen, has spotlighted a major milestone in Nigeria’s innovation ecosystem, following the successful patent award to a climate-focused startup under the organisation’s incubation programme.
Speaking after engaging with startups from the first cohort of the NIGCOMSAT accelerator, Egerton-Idehen described the moment as a strong validation of the growing capacity of Nigerian innovators to develop practical, scalable solutions to pressing challenges.
The startup, CarbonX, was recognised for its patented solution in climate financing, aimed at expanding access to clean energy while addressing environmental sustainability.
Driving Clean Energy Access Through Innovation
According to Egerton-Idehen, CarbonX’s model goes beyond conventional clean energy advocacy by providing tangible solutions for underserved communities. The initiative enables rural households to access clean cooking energy, while simultaneously reducing carbon emissions.
In addition, the platform incorporates a carbon credit incentive system, rewarding users for environmentally responsible practices—an approach she described as “innovation with inclusion at its core.”
The CarbonX team, represented by Ogah Abeni, Solomon Iwu-Ejike, and Temitayo Ogunwale, was commended for demonstrating how local startups can align technological innovation with real-world impact.
Scaling Impact Across Nigeria and Africa
Egerton-Idehen emphasised that the development reflects a broader shift within Nigeria’s tech ecosystem—from building for valuation to building for impact. She noted that startups are increasingly focused on solving critical challenges in areas such as climate change, infrastructure, and deep technology.
She also called for stronger collaboration among stakeholders to scale such solutions across Nigeria and the wider African continent, posing key questions around how to better support founders working on impact-driven innovations.

The NIGCOMSAT accelerator programme is part of ongoing efforts to position Nigeria as a hub for deep-tech and climate innovation. By supporting startups with infrastructure, mentorship, and visibility, the initiative aims to bridge the gap between ideas and scalable solutions.
