In a historic moment for the US Navy, an Igbo-American officer has been promoted to the rank of Captain, marking the pinnacle of a distinguished 21-year career.
The promotion ceremony, held on Thursday in Millington, Tennessee, celebrates the achievements of the officer, who previously made headlines in 2021 by becoming the first Nigerian national appointed as Commanding Officer of the USS Halsey (DDG-97), an Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer.
An alumnus of the University of Notre Dame and the US Naval War College, Captain Ndukwe began his journey in the Navy as an auxiliary officer in 2003, following the completion of his master’s degree in national security and strategy studies. His promotion is seen as a significant milestone, not only for his personal career but also for the representation of Nigerian-Americans in the US armed forces.
