PRESIDENT TINUBU PLEDGES SUPPORT FOR COMPLETION OF AFRICA’S LARGEST GAS PROJECT

 

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has said the Federal Government will support Nigerian firm, UTM Floating Liquefied Natural Gas Limited, and it’s foreign partners for the timely actualisation of their gas project.

Speaking on Wednesday at the State House, Abuja, during an audience with the management of the company and its foreign partners, President Tinubu pledged to remove all impediments to the timely completion of the facility.

President Tinubu commended UTM FLNG Limited as well as its technical partners, Technip Energies of France, and its Japanese counterpart, JGC, for the initiative and partnership.
“Yes, we have abundance of gas on the ground. However, the extractive industry needs the injection of your kind of partnership to be able to promote growth.
“It is a must for any government to support. Let me know if there are any bottlenecks, we will break them ,” he said.

The President applauded the conglomerate for the massive investment which, he said, would promote growth and protection of the environment.

Briefing the President earlier, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of UTM Offshore Limited, Mr. Julius Rone, said the project aligns with President Tinubu’s promise to develop Nigerian gas resources as a source of sustainable energy and economic development for the country.

He said when the facility gets upstream by the Fourth Quarter of 2026, it would process 1.5 million metric tonnes of Liquefied Natural Gas for foreign market, and produce 300,000 metric tonnes of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) for domestic use.

Mr. Rone said the company would cater for 25 percent of domestic demand for LPG.

He therefore solicited for President Tinubu’s support to eliminate any encumbrances that may endanger the delivery of the project by the targeted date.
In her remarks, the French Ambassador to Nigeria, Emmanuelle Blatmann, described the project as a milestone, cementing the French presence in Nigeria’s economic space.

The facility, she said, would advance the economic diversification agenda of the Federal Government by tapping into the country’s abundant gas deposit.
When delivered, she said, the gas from Nigeria would be viable as an alternative source of gas for Europe.

Also in the delegation were the Japanese Deputy Ambassador to Nigeria, Ms Hiromi Otuski, Managing Director of JGC, Mr. Naoki Noguchi, and Project Advisor, Mr. Sadeeq Mai Bornu.

As the World Athletics Championship Trials enters day two of actions and thrills in Benin City, the Federal Government has commended Edo State Government for hosting the national trials in the State

The Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Sports and Youth Development, Alhaji Ismaila Abubakar who gave the commendation today, stated that the The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) began the World Athletics Championship, Budapest 2023 trials in Benin on Wednesday, July 5, 2023 with over 450 athletes, including world champions; Tobi Amusan, Ese Brume and others to literally burn the tartan tracks at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin City.

Alhaji Ismaila, who said that the Federal Government was satisfied with the organisation of the event and happenings so far, urged other States in the country, to emulate Edo, adding that the
infrastructure provided by the State Government for the trials was not only of international standards but also helpful in ensuring a successful hosting of the National event.

He stated further that the Ministry is closely monitoring the trials to ensure that the country has the best athletes to represent it at the Competition.

The Permanent Secretary expressed optimism that Amusan and Brume, who are already qualified, will do Nigeria proud at the 2023 Budapest World Athletics Championship

He reiterated Federal Government’s commitment to the development of the teeming youth through sports in order to provide them with the opportunity to contribute meaningfully to the socio-economic development of the nation in line with the policy thrust of the present administration.

Tobi Amusan and Usheoritse Itshekiri have already claimed Nigeria’s 100m huddle ticket (women and men) at the event and will be representing Nigeria in Budapest.

Blessing Ogundiran of Edo State also won the 100m with a personal best of 11:50 secs.

The AFN trials holding in Benin is to select Nigeria’s flag bearers for the World Athletics Championship in Budapest, Hungary.

In a bid to implement the Digital Transformation pillar of Strategic Road Map and Action Plan (SRAP 2021-2024) of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Kashifu Inuwa, CCIE, the Agency’s Director General, has emphasised the need for collaboration to unlock Nigeria’s potential in the realm of Internet of Things (IoT) and it’s revolutionary impact on the country’s digital ecosystem.

Inuwa made this plea while delivering his keynote address at the IoT West Africa Conference and Exhibition 2023 in Lagos State.

The DG noted some challenges that need unlocking in order to access the potentials of IoT, especially infrastructure, cyber security, and data protection, stating that most IoT use cloud-based solutions — Alexa, Google, and others.

Inuwa said today’s computer systems are outperforming humans in many endeavours, especially the rise of generative AI, chat GPT, etc, and that is the fabric of the shift humanity is witnessing in accelerating the convergence between physical, biological, and digital world.

Referring to a McKinsey report, Inuwa said that by 2030, IoT has the capacity to generate between 5.5 to 12.6 trillion US dollars in value across different industries. Citing the exponential growth of connected devices, he pointed out that the number of connected devices now exceeds the global population, as reported by Cisco.

“Looking at the areas you can apply them, such as the area of agriculture, we need to increase our agri-products, and IoT can help us to do that with lesser human efforts,” he said.

He explained further that there are wearable plant sensors at the moment, which is one of the top technologies in 2023.

The NITDA boss hinted that farmers can have a sensor attached to their plant to manage its health, watering, fertilizer, pesticides, and this would invariably enhance the increase of food produce.

He said, “According to World Economic Forum, there is need to increase the global food production by 70% in the next seven years to address food security”.
Inuwa then opined that Nigeria, with its population growth rate, need to do more than any other country, “because we are growing faster than any country in the world.”.

He asserted that by 2050, Nigeria will be the third largest population in the world, therefore, there is need to explore how we can use IoT to increase the country’s food production.

He said IoT can be used to automate farms in the area of precision agriculture, soil moisture, watering, and many other functions within the farm.
In addition to agriculture, the NITDA Director General discussed the role of IoT in addressing security challenges, as IoT devices can monitor activities, movement patterns, and even enable geofencing to prevent incidents such as farmer-herder conflicts and kidnapping.

The DG emphasised that IoT could be utilised to enhance oil theft prevention by monitoring pipelines and sending alerts for quick security response.
He added that, “Today, most wearable IoT devices monitor the heartbeats, blood pressure which is also useful to medical practitioners in providing information for telemedicine and helps people with disabilities or the senior citizens as first point of health consultancy,” he said.

“We don’t have locally manufactured IoT devices, we need to build infrastructure, like data centers, cloud solution where we can put our IoT data,” he urged.
Inuwa advised that there is also the need to develop the talent within the country to enable digital sovereignty for the nation to gain independence of digital offerings.

“We need to build a tailor-made solution that will address our challenges, harness indigenous talents to promote IoT solutions, and this requires the collective efforts of the government, private sectors and all stakeholders.”

“We need you, the ecosystem, to do it because our approach today is no more government sitting in the office using armchair theory to come up with policies or regulations, we work with you, the ecosystem, to co-create whatever we do,” he concluded.

As part of efforts toward identifying and addressing the Information Technology (IT) talent gap in Nigeria by developing standards to balance supply with demand as well as create strategic partnerships to scale impact and strengthen engagement in the public and private sectors for building capacity on literacy and skills, the Director-General of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi CCIE, has affirmed the Agency’s readiness to partner with the SI Group & Beyond Mentors on critical areas of digitisation, particularly as it has to do with the youths and Information and Communications Technology (ICT).

Inuwa made the affirmation during a courtesy visit on him by the SI Group & Beyond Mentors Team at the Agency’s Corporate Headquarters, Abuja.

The DG who noted that while digitising, being invisible negates the essence of digitisation itself as one would be forgotten; stressing that the computer operates on available data which indicates that if a country, an organisation or individual does not make data available online, then the possibility of cultures, values, and identity being forgotten is certain.

“In Africa, there is a troubling scenario playing out in the gaming world where we don’t depict African characters, our core values, cultures into games; this is not the way to go. We need to train our youths on animation and visual arts so that they can create characters that would reflect the thoughts and views of Africans”, Inuwa enjoined.

Although there are over sixty-four initiatives in the Strategic Roadmap and Action Plan (SRAP 2021 – 2024) document, the NITDA Boss took time to explain a few which he however said will be reviewed to add more initiatives in order to align with the aspirations of the new administration’s focus on job and wealth creation.

He mentioned the pilot Technology Innovation and Entrepreneurship Support Scheme where startups are taken from ideas’ conceptualisation point to hatching and commercialisation.

Inuwa also talked about building the ecosystem as he reiterated NITDA’s principle of co-creation which he observed is part of the group’s areas of interest, noting that in 2022, NITDA was able to train over 600 Nigerian across the six geopolitical zones of the country.

Inuwa re-emphasised the importance of the collaboration, saying, it will, to a large extent, double the impact on beneficiaries.

“One of our mantras is the fact that we cannot succeed in isolation, which is why we welcome key collaborators in order for us to co-create and build the desired ecosystem.”

“Innovation as you know does not happen in isolation, hence, there is need to always sought out the main players in the ecosystem to work together. We work with international, National and Local Organisations”, the DG said.

While identifying lack of mentorship as one of the challenges faced by Nigerian youths, Inuwa said that innovation is not just about one’s ability to invent things but also the commercialisation of such inventions.

Inuwa noted that whereas the former is fundamental, the latter is more of acts where one needs mentorship and some skills to be able to commercialise the products. He highlighted the need to hit the ground running on the modus operandi and identifying areas with the most attention needed, especially the Digital Public Growth.
Earlier, the Leader of the team and founder/CEO of SI Group of Social Enterprise, Khadijah Abdullahi Iya, while stating the essence of the courtesy call said the visit was to familiarise NITDA with the work of SI Group and Beyond Mentors as well as identify shared values; explore areas of partnership and working relations; look into areas where the group’s networks, experience, and expertise can be leveraged upon as implementors for NITDA projects as well as look at other areas not properly harnessed for possible partnership.

Hajiya Khadijah enumerated the success stories of the group over the years and expressed optimism that the partnership with NITDA would go a long way towards actualising the focal points of the group’s objectives.

“I was in London today at the invitation of King Charles III of the United Kingdom and U.S. President Biden to attend the Climate Finance Mobilization Forum in London, aimed at mobilising a new generation of catalytic capital in the fight against climate change. This Forum convened a group of global leading philanthropies, companies, and investors.

I represented Africa and presented our agenda: the urgency for action on Climate Change; the threat to our lives and livelihoods; that Africa must lead the world in driving environmental sustainability. We can no longer be a passive player in an issue that is so central to our present and future.

Africa needs a just, fair, equal and a realistic strategy to address the inequalities that exist between Africa and the rest of the world. Africa must prioritize the provision of a mix of both traditional and renewable energy, but this cannot be at the expense of the drive to urgently address the Continent’s current energy deficit. The conversation on climate financing could not have come at a better time – Recent trends show a decrease in renewable energy investment to emerging and developing economies. Africa’s green revolution requires urgent, immediate and significant funding – funding that is larger than the resources available to African governments, and private sector. Climate change is a crisis that the countries in Africa did not create, the continent has contributed the least, yet continues to suffer an outsized impact.

A book by the Head of Media Relations at the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Dr Omoniyi Ibietan, will be formally presented to the public on 25 July, 2023, publishers of the book have said.

 

Premium Times Books said in a statement on Monday that the unveiling ceremony of Cyber Politics: Social Media, Social Demography and Voting Behaviour in Nigeria, will take place at the main auditorium of the communications and digital economy complex of the NCC, located at Mbora District of Abuja, from 10:00a.m. to 1:00p.m. on 25 July.

 

Published by Premium Times Books, the book publishing arm of the Premium Times Group, the 460-page book, spread over 12 chapters, gives expression to a critical phase within the distinct trajectory of Nigerian democracy through its elections.

 

Nigeria’s 2015 presidential election is utilised as the sounding board from which analyses that offer great insights into the future of voting behaviour in the country are made in this new title, that is both skilful in its rendition and ground-cutting in its intellectual approach.

 

The public presentation of the book will be made formally by Umar Danbatta, a professor, and the executive vice chairman and chief executive officer of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), where Dr Ibietan works as head of media relations. The author of the book, Dr Ibietan: Abiodun Adeniyi, a professor of mass communication and Deputy Dean, School of Post Graduate Studies at Baze University, Abuja; and a writer and newspaper columnist, Mojeed Dahiru, will take part in the panel session.

 

The panel session will focus on how politics played out and shaped the last two general elections in Nigeria. The possible implications of cyber politics in future elections will also be sprayed.

 

Among other prominent personalities who have commented on the book and the author is Prof. Danbatta.

 

The NCC CEO, in his foreword to the book, noted that: “the author situates the historical context of Nigerian politics and democracy” and more so “…the nexus between social media and voting behaviour, and the influence of the social media ecosystem among others in the electoral process.”

 

He described the book as a “compelling narrative, a scholar’s guide and companion on the various political communication themes it interprets. It is difficult to put down this work once you are drawn by its alluring and free-flowing prose and incisive analysis.”

 

The book has been available in the hard back and soft back versions in bookstores across the country since 12 June, 2023. The electronic copies of the book can also be purchased on online platforms, including Amazon.

Thanks to mobile technology, Sub-Saharan Africa has leapfrogged legacy voice and data networks, positioning itself at the forefront of innovations such as mobile money. Now, with 5G, the fifth generation of GSM cellular technology bursting into the mainstream, Africa has another opportunity to take a technological leap.

 

5G offers a significant jump in speed and performance over 4G/LTE with real-world speeds above 200Mbps and dramatic improvements in latency. The speed at which operators around the world are building 5G networks is unprecedented.
