As African continent continues to experience rapid technological growth and increasing internet penetration, the Director General, National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Kashifu Inuwa CCIE, has called on governments to be resilient in minimising the impact of cyberattacks on African Nations’ operations of critical infrastructure, national security, reputation, and economy.

Inuwa said this while speaking on ‘Strategies for Boosting Africa’s Cyber Resilience’ at the ongoing GISEC Global, a leading gathering ground for the cybersecurity community, in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

The DG said that to protect citizens and assets and genuinely harness the benefits of increasingly complicated digital reality, Africa cannot afford to be apathetic towards cybersecurity. With the right strategies and approaches, Africa can enhance its cybersecurity posture and build resilience against cyberattacks.

“African nations must work collaboratively to build and implement robust, inclusive, and proactive cyber resilience methodologies and comprehensive approaches to the identification and mitigation of critical vulnerabilities. This includes encouraging the exchange of collective knowledge and intelligence on cyber threats and promoting international cooperation in responding to cybercrime,” he said.

The DG further cited Check Point Research Report of 2022 that says African countries experienced an average of 1,848 cyberattacks per week per organisation in 2022, compared to 1,164 globally. Nigeria, the most populous African country, accounted for the largest number of users, with over 100 million internet users, followed by Egypt with 76 million and South Africa with 41 million. However, these countries, along with Kenya, also account for 60% of the $4 billion annual cost of cybercrime in Africa.

According to Inuwa, “despite these challenges, Africa’s digital transformation projects are gaining momentum, with online shoppers reaching almost 390 million and social media users reaching over 380 million in 2022.

“This growing accessibility is due to increasing mobile device adoption and improved telecommunication systems. However, the increasing threat of cyberattacks puts our socio-economic security at risk locally and internationally.”

Inuwa added that it is imperative that all governments prioritise cybersecurity and take the necessary measures to strengthen their digital defenses to protect citizens from the threats posed by online attacks.

Citing Africa Center for Strategic Studies Report, Inuwa said “Only 15 African countries have completed national cybersecurity strategies, which lay out strategic objectives and assign government-wide responsibilities for cyber threat monitoring and response.”

To boost Africa’s cyber resilience, Inuwa said countries must adopt several key strategies including; understanding the current cybersecurity landscape in Africa; create and implement comprehensive and multi-stakeholder policies and legal frameworks to ensure accountability and incentivise investments in cybersecurity measures; and close the cybersecurity talent gap by investing in training and development programmes to equip our workforce with the necessary skills and knowledge to protect themselves and our organisations against cyber threats.

“We need to invest in the development of robust cybersecurity technologies such as firewalls, intrusion detection systems, and endpoint protection. These tools can help detect and prevent cyberattacks before they cause significant harm.

“Both the government and private sector must play a role in providing institutional support for cybersecurity, including the creation of dedicated cybersecurity agencies and units, as well as public-private partnerships that allow for the sharing of resources and expertise.

“We must prioritise regional partnerships and cross-border cooperation to combat cyber threats, as they do not respect geographical boundaries. This can include African countries working together to formulate and implement effective responses to cyberattacks and share best practices.

“Finally, national cyber-response plans and specialised Computer Emergency Response Teams (CERTs) for critical infrastructure sectors are essential in ensuring cyber resilience. These plans should outline the procedures and protocols,” he said.

The rise in finance and accounting cybercrime through phishing and Business Email Compromise (BEC) has made headlines with massive implications for South African companies with gaps in their payment systems. “However, robust financial controls together with strong server, IT, and email monitoring processes aren’t enough if staff aren’t savvy to the psychological tricks scammers use to manipulate people, making them more vulnerable to tricker and deception,” says Ryan Mer, CEO at eftsure Africa, a Know Your Payee™ (KYP) platform provider.

 

Mer says it’s a myth that only gullible, unskilled professionals are susceptible to scams. “The misconception that only foolish individuals fall victim to cybercrime and payment fraud is dangerous because it leads to complacency in the highly educated who occupy senior positions within organisations. Criminals engaging in payment are often well-skilled, well-resourced and armed with enough industry knowledge to appear legitimate.”

 

Manipulating trust and competence

Scammers rely on human impulses to be helpful, avoid conflict, and problem-solve quickly and effectively to extract information or manipulate targets into taking action.

 

A common modus operandi is an attempt to win the trust of a potential victim by impersonating a known or trusted figure. Examples include an employee receiving a mail from an organisation’s financial director instructing them to arrange urgent payment to a supplier or an HR manager receiving a polite email from a member of staff requesting their bank details be changed for payroll purposes.

 

“An employee’s desire to perform their duties swiftly and competently, especially for a trusted figure of authority, is manipulated by criminals who rely on an instruction being actioned without question for a scam to be successful. In such instances, only an automated system for detecting red flags in outbound payments can offer the level of protection organisations really need to counter human error,” says Mer.

 

Banking on urgency

While scammers become increasingly inventive, an age-old tactic cybercriminals routinely rely on is creating a sense of urgency in their victims. Mer says phishing messages and business email compromise scams are designed to make employees more likely comply with a potential threat that they know they should report. “Scammers lure victims into acting quickly before they have time to think rationally about the activities they’re undertaking. Implementing processes that require staff to slow down and double-check any actions that involve payments is vital.”

 

He adds that a sudden change in customer or supplier business practices, such as a new point of contact, change of email address or banking details should be viewed with caution and thoroughly verified before complying with an urgent request. “In many organisations, there is a concerning disconnect between the theoretical controls in place and what actually happens in everyday business contexts. Cybercriminals often rely on the herd principle in which people in organisations adopt the behaviour of those around them. The risk that one person in a team complies with a scammer may result in others being deceived in the same way. Sound business processes and educated staff, while essential, can only protect a business so far as sophisticated phishing and BEC scams can defeat the internal controls of even the most vigilant teams,” says Mer.

 

Extra, automated protection

Cybercrime is constantly evolving which makes it a moving target. Interpol’s last African Cyberthreat Assessment Report published in 2021, placed South Africa as having the third-highest number of cybercrime victims in the world, costing the country a staggering R2.2-billion annually. “Ongoing education on the latest scams and the tactics used to execute them is crucial for South African companies. Most successful cyber breaches have one thing in common: People. Your company can be protected from every tech angle, with the latest security updates and most advanced threat detection, but it takes just one employee accidentally sharing their password for a major breach to occur.

 

Human-targeted attacks will remain the number one threat to cyber security and will only keep increasing in volume and complexity this year. As even casual observers have become more adept at spotting emails that don’t look quite right, criminals constantly work at creating more sophisticated traps. This year, we’ll likely see more complex attacks as well as automation and the monetisation thereof, as bad actors leverage and repurpose the likes of ChatGPT and other AI chat tools.

 

Human error is not only the biggest security blind spot, but also requires more effort to remediate. It necessitates training and buy-in, as opposed to a security threat you might patch or reconfigure to a more secure mode. And after all that, your security still depends on the will of those humans to engage with the training and execute the learnings. There are no quick solutions, and any solution in place requires constant reviewing, reengagement, and reporting.

 

So how do you get staff members to engage in security messaging and implement these instructions correctly? By making it personal for and applicable to them.

 

South Africa already has a security-first culture due to our sensitivity to crime in general. Your toughest challenge is then to broaden the scope of staff members’ security mindset.

Do this by always providing consistent, friendly, and supportive engagement on security topics. If your security team can add value to other staff members’ lives, whether through support, personal advice, or leading by example, these quality exchanges will become a foundation for further interaction. If staff members perceive that they, too, get value out of engaging with security teams and materials, they’ll be more inclined to adopt your overall organisational strategy and awareness mission.

 

You could tailor such initiatives by:

Using strong awareness content about the threats most prevalent in your business to regularly keep security in focus.
Adding additional customised content to such materials to dig deeper and create interest in current trends.
Sharing ‘inside info’ such as vulnerability notices and remediation steps for consumer phones, tablets, and wireless routers that staff members may use in their personal lives.
Running routine unannounced simulations and sharing the results with the group.

It is now possible to use a publicly available artificial chatbot to generate a complete infection chain, possibly beginning with a spear phishing email written in entirely convincing, human-like language and eventually causing a complete takeover of a company’s computer systems.

Researchers at Checkpoint recently created such a plausible phishing email as a test. They only used ChatGPT, a chatbot that uses deep learning techniques to generate text and conversations that can convince basically anyone that it was written by a real person.

In reality, there are many potential cybersecurity dangers wrapped up in this impressive technology developed by OpenAI and currently available online for free.

Here are just a few of them:

Social engineering: ChatGPT’s powerful language model can be used to generate realistic and convincing phishing messages, making it easier for attackers to trick victims into providing sensitive information or downloading malware.

Scamming: The generation of text through ChatGPT’s language models allows attackers to create fake ads, listings and many other forms of scamming material.

Impersonation: ChatGPT can be used to create a convincing digital copy of an individual’s writing style, allowing attackers to impersonate their target in a text-based setting, such as in an email or text message.

Automation of attacks: ChatGPT can also be used to automate the creation of malicious messages and phishing emails making it possible for attackers to launch large-scale attacks more efficiently.

Spamming: The language model can be fine-tuned to produce large amounts of low-quality content, which can be used in a variety of contexts, including as spam comments on social media or in spam email campaigns.

All five points above are legit threats to companies and all internet users that will only become more prevalent as OpenAI continues to train its model.

If the list managed to convince you, the technology succeeded in its purpose, although in this instance not with malicious intent.

All the text from points one to five was actually written by ChatGPT with minimal tweaks for clarity. The tool is so powerful it can convincingly identify and word its own inherent dangers to cybersecurity.

However, there are mitigating steps individuals and companies can take, including new-school security awareness training. Cybercrime is moving at light speed. A few years ago, cybercriminals used to specialise in identity theft, but now they take over your organisation’s network, hack into your bank accounts, and steal tens or hundreds of thousands of rands.

An intelligent platform like ChatGPT may have been created with the best intentions, but it only adds to the burden on internet users to always stay vigilant, trust their instincts and always know the risks involved in clicking on any link or opening an attachment.

Speaking on surge, John added that “Our solution is a scalable solution, one important thing we do is that we are at the point that it scales. What we do is that before bandwidth growth happens, we see it through graphs, it could be a cyber attack or many users at a time like now we have people accessing online financial transactions. We advise organizations on how to scale. We encourage people to go online and do transactions and we focus on the root cause. We have mirror solution and fortress to ward off attacks for organization and they are automated.

We launched our network and security operation center this December, the aim is to provide cyber security management to enterprises, so what we do is that we are able to help businesses in the area of monitoring/visibility. This is when they will be able to identify when there is a problem. So, with our NSOC solution as a service we are helping to bridge the gap of lack of resource and support networks of organizations from the financial sector to ISPs.”

 

 

Institutional Recognition Award presented to the Tezza Business Solutions as a Digital Economy Enabler in Nigeria

The award was presented by the Lagos State Honorable Commissioner of Science & Technology, Mr. Hakeem Popoola Fahm at the Nigeria’s Top 50 Digital Economy Enablers Event which held on 14th February 2023 at Sheraton Hotel Lagos. The event was organized by IT Edge News Africa.

Never been one to really care much about awards but we are excited about the recognition because of the work our talents have put in over the course of the last 12 months.

We started out as an outsourcing outfit creating IT talent capacity to be utilized by clients in North America. We eventually evolved into an IT & Business Consulting company offering Business Agility, Customer Experience Management, Healthcare and Technology services across the Banking, Insurance, Wealth Management, Technology and Healthcare verticals.

We’ve had zero (0) layoffs in 13 years, more than 5 inter-staff marriages not mentioning the number of Tezzanite children born into our midst. We’ve managed to do all this by bringing in foreign currency into each of our African offices and we’ve so far surpassed 1 Billion Naira in new business in 2023 alone…no investors, no debt!

We are super excited to be seen and recognized as a digital economy enabler in my country of birth, Nigeria!
