In a powerful intervention against digital exclusion, a UK-based Nigerian tech entrepreneur, Wale Atekoja, is rewriting the future of disadvantaged children in Lagos, one line of code at a time.

His organization, Borderless Tek, has launched the Kids Coding Partnership — a grassroots tech education program designed to equip underprivileged schoolchildren in communities like Ikorodu and Yaba with foundational coding and software development skills, completely free of charge.

This is not just another CSR initiative. It’s a deliberate human-centered response to the growing digital divide that continues to marginalize low-income Nigerian children from the technology revolution sweeping the globe.

“We’ve been teaching Black kids in Europe how to code, but what about those back home?” says Wale Atekoja, better known as @AtexXeta on social media. “We’re not targeting the privileged. We’re starting with the forgotten — the children who have never touched a laptop.”

 

The first three-month cohort of the program is scheduled to kick off in September 2025, targeting public Junior and Senior Secondary School students across Lagos’ low-income areas. The curriculum will focus on practical, hands-on learning — from basic programming to animation, mobile app creation, and problem-solving.

But Wale is not walking this path alone.

The initiative is supported by strategic partners such as Yesding (education facilitation), Proline (internet infrastructure), and Akowe App, a credential verification startup that will ensure every certificate earned is both digitally secured and internationally recognized.

The classrooms — to be set up in schools and libraries — are being fitted with digital infrastructure through partnerships with local governments and community stakeholders. Earlier pilot classes held this year already demonstrated tangible success: students who had never used a laptop built mobile apps and animations in just weeks.

Wale’s intervention is not just technical — it is deeply personal. Raised in Nigeria, he knows what it feels like to have the intellect but not the opportunity.

“I know what it’s like to be capable but invisible,” he says. “That’s why we’re building a new table — not waiting for a seat at someone else’s.”

Dr. Obiageli Amadiobi, the Director General of the National Office for Technology Acquisition and Promotion (NOTAP), has issued a stern warning to companies failing to submit their technology transfer agreements for proper evaluation and registration. During a recent familiarization visit to several Information and Communication Technology (ICT) companies in Lagos, Dr. Amadiobi announced that such companies will soon face stiff penalties and prosecution.

Dr. Amadiobi highlighted that NOTAP’s primary mandate is to regulate the inflow of foreign technology through the registration of technology transfer agreements and to promote the development of locally motivated technologies. She expressed concern that some companies are circumventing this process by not registering their agreements, particularly those involving both hardware and software, thereby undermining the system.

“Records indicate that a significant percentage of companies in Nigeria rely on imported technologies worth millions of dollars without NOTAP registration, which is required by law. This practice shortchanges the Nigerian economy,” Dr. Amadiobi stated. She emphasized that NOTAP’s involvement during the technology negotiation stage is mandatory to ensure that Nigerian entrepreneurs secure appropriate technology under the best contractual terms.

The Director General affirmed that while NOTAP is committed to working with compliant companies, it will impose strict penalties on those flouting the rules. “In line with the renewed hope mantra of the present administration, no company will be allowed to avoid registration of their technology transfer agreements with NOTAP,” she declared.

Mr. Adewale Adeyipo, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Computer Warehouse Group (CWG), welcomed the new NOTAP leadership’s energy and enthusiasm. He expressed CWG’s willingness to collaborate with NOTAP to advance the ICT ecosystem. Mr. Adeyipo noted that NOTAP’s initiatives could generate over 2,000 jobs annually within the ICT sector, which is crucial for the nation’s global competitiveness.

He lamented that Nigeria has spent over $987.8 million on digital media subscriptions and downloads, funds that could have been retained within the country with better governmental support for local ICT operators through strategic policies.

In support, Mrs. Ola William, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Microsoft Nigeria Plc., praised NOTAP’s efforts in accelerating the ICT sector’s development. Anambra State ICT Agency Achieves Significant Milestones in Digital Transformation

 

Chukwuemeka Fred Agbata (CFA), the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer (MD/CEO) of the Anambra State ICT Agency, recently shared the remarkable achievements made by the agency and the state government in advancing digital transformation. The strides include notable accomplishments in full digitization, Right of Way for Telecom Infracos, collaboration with the Internet Exchange Point of Nigeria (IXPN), and engagement with Internet Service Providers (ISPs).

In a media parley with journalists, Chukwuemeka Agbata emphasized, “The Anambra state government has taken a bold step as part of its determination to deepen infrastructure enhancement, leading to the full implementation of a zero Right of Way policy. This initiative has inspired many Infracos to expand their tech infrastructure in the state through the installation of fiber ducts, resulting in an enhanced quality of ICT services across Anambra.”

He further added, “Anambra remains one of the few states currently implementing the Zero ROW policy, marking a significant stride towards fully deepening broadband penetration.”

Highlighting collaborative efforts, Chukwuemeka Agbata revealed that the state government has partnered with IXPN to establish an internet exchange point, making Anambra State the first in the zone to host such a facility. He emphasized that this development will improve interconnectivity, reduce the cost of internet access, and deepen penetration in the state and the South East region.

Taking a cue from international standards, the implementation of public Wi-Fi, known as ‘Solution Wi-Fi,’ has been activated around university areas in the capital city of Awka, including Aroma Junction, Book Foundation, and Unizik Gate. This initiative aims to enhance connectivity for the populace, particularly the youth, and reduce operating expenses for small businesses in these areas.

Speaking on e-Government solutions, Chukwuemeka Agbata stated, “The adoption of the new domain has been highly successful. As a pioneering move in the state’s e-governance efforts, we have successfully transitioned to the Federal Government-approved .ng second-level domain. This transition has facilitated the relocation of Anambra State’s online digital assets, in line with Federal Government directives, to the ‘anambrastate.gov.ng’ and ‘an.gov.ng’ state-owned domains.”
