The Google West Africa presented its new Director for the continent, Mr. Olumide Balogun to the Director General, National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Kashifu Inuwa CCIE, as Tech Giant it promised to deepen the collaboration that exists between the two organisations.

Mr. Balogun who led other Google executives to the Agency’s Corporate Headquarters, Abuja, disclosed that the familiarisation visit to NITDA has become imperative because it would restate Google West Africa’s commitments to deepening the partnership.

He said, “I have been at Google for four years, and recently took over the West Africa Director lead role. And our coming here today is to identify the critical steps that we need to take to jointly actualise the Nigerian President’s initiative to drive 1 million digital jobs because Google cannot thrive in isolation.”

Mr. Balogun revealed that Google has been working on Africa Internet for over eight years. According to him, “In 2015, during our premier developer event, we announced that Google has shifted from being a mobile-first company to an AI-first company. So, we were quite amused with all the chat GPT conversations.”

While disclosing that Google is currently working on a document that would detail the impact of Artificial Intelligence in Africa which will be launched in the University of Johannesburg, South Africa in September, the Director is inviting the NITDA’s Director General, Kashifu Inuwa, to deliver keynote address at the event.

In his remarks, the NITDA boss maintained that he believes that they can create a million digital jobs if they work together to craft a strategy on how to achieve the target.

According to Inuwa, NITDA is positioning Nigeria for accelerated job creation in a digital economy. Saying, “We are looking at the Nigeria Startup Act, which identifies some initiatives such as the talent development that can enable job creation. Nigeria can position itself to bridge the gap because we have youthful population,” he said.

He noted that the government’s responsibility in the ecosystem is to intervene in terms of policies, regulations, and infrastructure where needed, the objectives of any regulation are to help create market, democratize access to services, protect consumers, enhance service delivery, and enable innovation.

“Basically, Regulation can be rule-based and non-rule based. Non-rule-based is what we advocated for. To allow the ecosystem players to self-regulate themselves, put the standard in place, and we can help to ensure new entrance comply to that standard because what we are after is to have a responsible and ethical view of platforms around the world,” he said.

He maintained that Nigeria could position itself to bridge the gap in digital transformation because it has a youthful population. “In 2018, digitally transformed enterprise contributed 18.5% global GDP. It was projected to reach 53.3% this year, that is over 50% of the global GDP. The generative AI is going to add about 7 trillion US dollars,” he said.

While acknowledging that NITDA’s partnership with Google Developers Group has resulted in the training of 150,000 youths in Nigeria, Inuwa noted that, “Presently we have an initiative running here in Abuja at our National Center for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics (NCAIR), and we want to expand the same program to other states in collaboration with the GDG as well. We are looking at how we can build technology development zones in partnership with universities to promote smart manufacturing.”

“Similarly, we are also looking at how to establish the seed investment fund for all the startups to attract investment. Last year, over 626 billion was invested but only 3.5% came to Africa and if you look at our population, we can do more than that; these are some of the ideas we need stakeholders like you to come to work with us on,” he concluded.

Automation of attacks: ChatGPT can also be used to automate the creation of malicious messages and phishing emails making it possible for attackers to launch large-scale attacks more efficiently.

Spamming: The language model can be fine-tuned to produce large amounts of low-quality content, which can be used in a variety of contexts, including as spam comments on social media or in spam email campaigns.

All five points above are legit threats to companies and all internet users that will only become more prevalent as OpenAI continues to train its model.

All the text from points one to five was actually written by ChatGPT with minimal tweaks for clarity. The tool is so powerful it can convincingly identify and word its own inherent dangers to cybersecurity.

However, there are mitigating steps individuals and companies can take, including new-school security awareness training. Cybercrime is moving at light speed. A few years ago, cybercriminals used to specialise in identity theft, but now they take over your organisation’s network, hack into your bank accounts, and steal tens or hundreds of thousands of rands.

An intelligent platform like ChatGPT may have been created with the best intentions, but it only adds to the burden on internet users to always stay vigilant, trust their instincts and always know the risks involved in clicking on any link or opening an attachment.

AI (Artificial Intelligence) a form of computing that allows the machine to take decision and learn from individuals to give a feedback is on the rise. In a simple terms AI can be defined as:the ability of a computer or a robot controlled by a computer to do tasks that are usually done by humans because they require human intelligence and discernment.

Now the leaders of this is CHATGTP(In caps for emphasis) this is an open source platform that can help you do a lot of things easily without you lifting a finger. A student used the platform to have an all A’s in her assignment. I typed a query on how to write an article and the platform brought out a fantastic article written for me on my chosen subject in few seconds. Well written more than human!

So as you can see, just like the way industrial revolution displaced many people in their jobs and also creates job, the way computer age displaced many people and trust me this 4th industrial revolution will displace many of us and I am scared of jobs like Journalism, editing, copywriting, proofreading, advertising , content creators etc ! AI will take over .

Many countries of the world are in the race to build a fantastic AI  platform today which can be incorporated into many things from autonomous driving to aviation , from medical to education, Google recently tried to launch their own platform (Sparrow) but where was a glitch and they lost billions of dollars but that doesn’t mean they have rested on their oars! Google don’t give up they will be back !

Chinese biggest tech firm Baidu will be launching their own version of ChatGTP by March this year ! Trust Chinese to always deliver on things like these. With this race of AI going on, the Africans are left behind !

With the elections coming up in few days time, Nigerians are contemplating to either vote a senile man that doesn’t understand the concept of building smart cities or the need to galvanise the youths to build robust solutions and creating a techhub around the nation. Nobody is talking that .

As the world is tilting towards 4th industrial revolution, just like other ages and revolutions before us , Nigeria is doing a catch-up game; a country that is trying to sort out the basic things and mundane things that should be overlooked such as energy, electricity, fuel, security and capacity building ! The country is still saddled with these basic things an indication that the rest of world will leave us behind!
