The Minister of State Industry, Trade and
\nInvestment, Ambassdor Mariam Y. Katagum
\nnoted that the Standards Organisation of
\nNigeria ( SON) is a useful tool in the delivery of
\nthe Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and
\nInvestments mandate of facilitating trade and
\nthe growth of the Nigerian industrial sector.<\/p>\n
The Minister of State, made this statement at
\nthe SON 50th Anniversary celebration in Abuja
\non Monday. She noted that 50 years was a long
\ntime in the life of an organisation in Nigeria
\nespecially given the fact that the country\u2019s
\nexistence as an independent country was only
\n12 years longer.<\/p>\n
\u201cSON must therefore be one of the oldest
\ngovernment institutions in Nigeria. This
\nanniversary is undoubtedly a milestone worth
\ncelebrating. In addition, the steady growth of the
\nOrganisation from its humble beginnings to
\nbecoming the Apex Standards Body in Nigeria,
\nwith constitutional responsibilities, is also
\nremarkable and worth celebrating\u201d, she said.<\/p>\n
While congratulating the organisation,
\nAmbassdor Katagum said \u201cin
\nacknowledgement of its consistent
\nimplementation of reforms aimed at making its
\nservices more easily accessible to the public,
\nSON has been ranked first in the Ease of Doing
\nBusiness by the Presidential Enabling Business
\nEnvironment Council (PEBEC).<\/p>\n
She went on to note that,\u201d the organisation also
\nrecently received an Award from the National
\nInformation and Technology Development
\nAgency (NITDA) for Ease of Doing Business in
\nthe Information Technology Sector. These two
\nrecognitions are no doubt fitting anniversary
\ngifts which will of course challenge the
\norganisation to keep up its good work,she said.<\/p>\n
The Director General of SON, Mallam Farouk
\nSalim explained that SON is working with the
\nNational Assembly to ensure the review of the
\nagency\u2019s Act and appealed for a speedy
\nfacilitation of the process.
\nWhile acknowledging the achievements and
\nstrides of SON in the last 50 years, Mallam
\nFarouk Salim said his vision for the Organsation
\nin the next 50 years is to be the foremost
\nstandardisation body in Africa and among the
\ntop ranking globally.<\/p>\n
The SON helmsman explained that while this
\nvision is achievable, the Organisation would
\nneed to surmount several challenges to achieve
\nit.<\/p>\n
In a goodwill message, the Minister of State for
\nWorks and Housing, Alhaji Umar El-Yakub said
\nSON has changed the story of \u201cMade in
\nNigeria\u201d goods.<\/p>\n
Representatives of the Nigeria Customs Service,
\nNational Agency for Food and Drugs
\nAdministration and Control (NAFDAC) and the
\nManufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN)
\ncommended SON on efforts to ensure
\neradication of substandard products.<\/p>\n
The highlight of event was the Launch of the
\nSON Compendium and Presentation of Awards
\nto deserving members of staff and SON State
\nOffices.<\/p>\n
The Head, SMEs Desk, Engr. Pheabean O. S.
\nArumemi won the \u201cDirector General\u2019s Award for
\nSpecial Contribution\u201d, while Mrs. Amina Haliru,
\nAssistant Chief Standards Officer\/ Head, Halal
\nDesk won the award for \u201c Outstanding Staff\u201d.<\/p>\n
The award for \u201cMost Efficient State\u201d was won
\nby SON Rivers State office and was received by
\nthe Acting Director, South – South Directorate,
\nEngr, Samuel Ayuba.<\/p>\n
SON\u2019s Ogun State office 1, won double awards
\nfor Improved Percentage for Service Income and
\nMost Effective State Office, the South \u2013 West
\nRegional Director, Mrs. Yeside Akinlabi and the
\nState Coordinator, Ogun State Office, Mr.Jerome
\nOtene Umoru were on hand to receive the
\naward.<\/p>\n
SON\u2019s Ogun State office received the award for
\nthe\u201d State with the Highest Number of New
\nProducts Identified for MANCAP\u201d the award
\nreceived by the State Coordinator, Engr.
\nDanmola Abayomi, supported by his Regional
\nDirector.<\/p>\n
The event ended with an exhibition to showcase
\nthe products of Companies who have
\nconsistently maintained quality.<\/p>\n
The 50th Anniversary Celebration continues
\nwith Regional Exhibitions of Made \u2013 in \u2013 Nigeria
\nproducts in Lagos, Kaduna, Port Harcourt and
\nKano. There will also be a special programme
\nfor recognition of deserving Companies in
