Katagum<br \/>\nnoted that the Standards Organisation of<br \/>\nNigeria ( SON) is a useful tool in the delivery of<br \/>\nthe Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and<br \/>\nInvestments mandate of facilitating trade and<br \/>\nthe growth of the Nigerian industrial sector.<\/p>\n<p>The Minister of State, made this statement at<br \/>\nthe SON 50th Anniversary celebration in Abuja<br \/>\non Monday. She noted that 50 years was a long<br \/>\ntime in the life of an organisation in Nigeria<br \/>\nespecially given the fact that the country\u2019s<br \/>\nexistence as an independent country was only<br \/>\n12 years longer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSON must therefore be one of the oldest<br \/>\ngovernment institutions in Nigeria. This<br \/>\nanniversary is undoubtedly a milestone worth<br \/>\ncelebrating. In addition, the steady growth of the<br \/>\nOrganisation from its humble beginnings to<br \/>\nbecoming the Apex Standards Body in Nigeria,<br \/>\nwith constitutional responsibilities, is also<br \/>\nremarkable and worth celebrating\u201d, she said.<\/p>\n<p>While congratulating the organisation,<br \/>\nAmbassdor Katagum said \u201cin<br \/>\nacknowledgement of its consistent<br \/>\nimplementation of reforms aimed at making its<br \/>\nservices more easily accessible to the public,<br \/>\nSON has been ranked first in the Ease of Doing<br \/>\nBusiness by the Presidential Enabling Business<br \/>\nEnvironment Council (PEBEC).<\/p>\n<p>She went on to note that,\u201d the organisation also<br \/>\nrecently received an Award from the National<br \/>\nInformation and Technology Development<br \/>\nAgency (NITDA) for Ease of Doing Business in<br \/>\nthe Information Technology Sector. These two<br \/>\nrecognitions are no doubt fitting anniversary<br \/>\ngifts which will of course challenge the<br \/>\norganisation to keep up its good work,she said.<\/p>\n<p>The Director General of SON, Mallam Farouk<br \/>\nSalim explained that SON is working with the<br \/>\nNational Assembly to ensure the review of the<br \/>\nagency\u2019s Act and appealed for a speedy<br \/>\nfacilitation of the process.<br \/>\nWhile acknowledging the achievements and<br \/>\nstrides of SON in the last 50 years, Mallam<br \/>\nFarouk Salim said his vision for the Organsation<br \/>\nin the next 50 years is to be the foremost<br \/>\nstandardisation body in Africa and among the<br \/>\ntop ranking globally.<\/p>\n<p>The SON helmsman explained that while this<br \/>\nvision is achievable, the Organisation would<br \/>\nneed to surmount several challenges to achieve<br \/>\nit.<\/p>\n<p>In a goodwill message, the Minister of State for<br \/>\nWorks and Housing, Alhaji Umar El-Yakub said<br \/>\nSON has changed the story of \u201cMade in<br \/>\nNigeria\u201d goods.<\/p>\n<p>Representatives of the Nigeria Customs Service,<br \/>\nNational Agency for Food and Drugs<br \/>\nAdministration and Control (NAFDAC) and the<br \/>\nManufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN)<br \/>\ncommended SON on efforts to ensure<br \/>\neradication of substandard products.<\/p>\n<p>The highlight of event was the Launch of the<br \/>\nSON Compendium and Presentation of Awards<br \/>\nto deserving members of staff and SON State<br \/>\nOffices.<\/p>\n<p>The Head, SMEs Desk, Engr. Pheabean O. S.<br \/>\nArumemi won the \u201cDirector General\u2019s Award for<br \/>\nSpecial Contribution\u201d, while Mrs. Amina Haliru,<br \/>\nAssistant Chief Standards Officer\/ Head, Halal<br \/>\nDesk won the award for \u201c Outstanding Staff\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The award for \u201cMost Efficient State\u201d was won<br \/>\nby SON Rivers State office and was received by<br \/>\nthe Acting Director, South &#8211; South Directorate,<br \/>\nEngr, Samuel Ayuba.<\/p>\n<p>SON\u2019s Ogun State office 1, won double awards<br \/>\nfor Improved Percentage for Service Income and<br \/>\nMost Effective State Office, the South \u2013 West<br \/>\nRegional Director, Mrs. Yeside Akinlabi and the<br \/>\nState Coordinator, Ogun State Office, Mr.Jerome<br \/>\nOtene Umoru were on hand to receive the<br \/>\naward.<\/p>\n<p>SON\u2019s Ogun State office received the award for<br \/>\nthe\u201d State with the Highest Number of New<br \/>\nProducts Identified for MANCAP\u201d the award<br \/>\nreceived by the State Coordinator, Engr.<br \/>\nDanmola Abayomi, supported by his Regional<br \/>\nDirector.<\/p>\n<p>The event ended with an exhibition to showcase<br \/>\nthe products of Companies who have<br \/>\nconsistently maintained quality.<\/p>\n<p>The 50th Anniversary Celebration continues<br \/>\nwith Regional Exhibitions of Made \u2013 in \u2013 Nigeria<br \/>\nproducts in Lagos, Kaduna, Port Harcourt and<br \/>\nKano.
