It’s not just about being present during the good times, but also about showing up when it matters the most. This thought came to mind as I reflected on the inspiring actions of Mr. Williams Uchemba during his wife’s labor.

When Williams left a business meeting in Enugu, caught the last flight home, and rushed to be with his wife, it wasn’t just a display of affection; it was a testament to his understanding of what marriage truly means. For some, this might seem like a simple gesture, but it speaks volumes about his priorities. His actions underscore an important truth: being there for your partner is not just about resources; it’s about the heart to make sacrifices.

Sure, some might argue that Williams’ ability to drop everything is due to financial privilege. But here’s the reality: even those with the means to do so often choose not to. Many would rather rationalize their absence with excuses like, “What difference does my presence make? Am I the doctor?” Others might view such a journey as a waste of resources.

This highlights a deeper issue in some marriages. It’s not about money—it’s about valuing your partner and understanding that your presence alone can bring comfort and reassurance. Unfortunately, not all men embody this mindset. Some would rather hang out at a bar than be by their wife’s side during labor. Even worse, some women have been conditioned to accept such behavior as normal, believing that “men can’t handle the stress” or “that’s just how it is.”

But it doesn’t have to be this way. Apostle Femi Lazarus once pointed out how many women have grown so accustomed to neglect that they no longer recognize poor treatment. Yet, the same labor pains they bear alone could be lightened by a partner willing to stand with them, no matter how uncomfortable the situation might be.

Williams’ dedication to his wife and family is a powerful reminder of what marriage should look like—a partnership where both parties prioritize and cherish each other. It’s no surprise that his wife radiates happiness and contentment. When a woman feels truly loved, she becomes willing to make sacrifices that others might not understand, because she knows her happiness is equally valued.

This isn’t about comparing today’s relationships to those of our parents’ generation. It’s about setting a standard of love and support that fosters mutual respect and growth. As we celebrate the Uchembas and their growing family, let’s also take a moment to reflect on the kind of partnerships we aspire to build—ones rooted in love, sacrifice, and understanding.

Congratulations, Mr. and Mrs. Uchemba. May your story continue to inspire.

—Ody Adede Agbor

Marriage, at its core, is a union built on love, sacrifice, and understanding.
