While job interviews are the place for a company to find out about a prospective employee, they’re also a chance for the interviewee to find out if they want to work for, and with, the people interviewing them.<\/p>\n
To spot someone who might end up being a difficult boss, The Wall Street Journal writes, there are some things to look out for and steps to take.<\/p>\n
\ud83e\udd1d Meet in person: Choosing an in-person interview can give you many extra clues about how a potential employer interacts with people. If your interview is over lunch or coffee, you can also see how the interviewer treats service staff.<\/p>\n
\ud83d\udd09 Ask direct questions: If you want to know more about a specific aspect of the role or working culture, ask about it. For example, if it turned out you were just the latest to leave in a long line of people who couldn’t work with your last manager, ask the interviewer how many people have previously been in the role.<\/p>\n
\ud83d\udd0d Look out for what they don’t answer: If a potential employer won’t allow you to speak with other direct reports to get a sense of the work environment, that’s a red flag. Equally, if you ask basic questions about the role and the potential manager is not able to provide adequate answers, that’s a problem. If you don’t know what is expected of the role, you can’t know how to succeed.<\/p>\n
