The Director-General/Chief Executive Officer, Engr. Abisoye Coker-Odusote, hosted her inaugural interactive session with the media today, Friday, May 10th, 2024, at the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) Corporate Headquarters.

The interactive session served as a platform for the DG to address pertinent issues concerning the Commission and to dispel any misinformation surrounding NIMC’s services and products. It also aimed to strengthen the collaborative relationship between NIMC and the media.

During the session, Engr. Abisoye Coker-Odusote engaged with members of the media, providing insights into NIMC’s ongoing initiatives, challenges, and future plans. The open dialogue fostered transparency and accountability, enhancing public understanding of NIMC’s role in national identity management.

The DG emphasized the importance of accurate information dissemination and underscored NIMC’s commitment to delivering efficient and reliable services to Nigerians. The interactive session further demonstrated NIMC’s dedication to engaging stakeholders and fostering a culture of collaboration.

Organized by DSNai – Data Science Nigeria, in collaboration with Google.org, the initiative offers a comprehensive package of 40 short, animated learning videos available in both Hausa and English. The Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (EVC/CEO), National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI), Mr. Khalil Suleiman Halilu has underscored the importance of effective resource management, emphasizing the Agency’s responsibility in administering public funds for the benefit of Nigeria.

 

The EVC stated this while declaring open one-day sensitization workshop on Government Integrated Financial Management Information System (GIFMIS) policy and guidelines for financial managers of NASENI in collaboration with the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation (OAGF) held at the Agency’s headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday, May 14, 2024.

 

The workshop was  aimed at enhancing financial management practices for NASENI principal officers, directors, managing directors and accounting officers system-wide.

 

Urging the participants to take the workshop with all sense of purpose, the EVC/CEO called for accurate financial record-keeping and the adoption of innovative processes which remain integral in the GIFMIS policy. He stressed the significance of staff training and capacity development to ensure the discharge of duties to make NASENI a preferred public sector employer in Nigeria.

 

While warning staff on classified documents, Mr. Halilu said confidentiality in financial management is a crucial aspect and called for strict adherence to public service regulations regarding the integrity of official information.

 

He further emphasized the Agency’s 3Cs initiative of Collaboration, Creation, and Commercialization as NASENI’s core operating principles, expressing confidence in achieving the Agency’s goals in alignment with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

 

The Deputy Programme Manager, System Support and Sustainability Directorate, OAGF, Mr. Jeremiah Asanato, giving overview of the GIFMIS, said it is aimed at integrating budgeting and government expenditure. He emphasized that the policy will help to address irregularities, corruption, and other fraudulent activities in government Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs).

 

In his vote of thanks, Coordinating Director,Finance and Accounts, NASENI, Alh. Ibrahim Baba Dauda, appreciated all Finance and Accounts Directorate staff from across NASENI centres system-wide for attending the workshop. He challenged them to start thinking of making NASENI an independent revenue-generating agency.

On behalf of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) is to host the 10th edition of the prestigious Network of African Data Protection Authorities’ (NADPA-RADPA) Conference and Annual General Meeting. This significant decision was made during the 9th NADPA Annual General Meeting held in Nairobi, Kenya, where Nigeria, through NDPC under the exemplary leadership of the National Commissioner/CEO, Dr. Vincent Olatunji, emerged as the successful bidder to host this prestigious event.

The Network of African Data Protection Authorities (NADPA-RAPDP), founded in Ouagadougou in September 2016, consists of 23 (Twenty-Three) Data Protection Authorities across Africa. Its primary objective is to establish a platform for exchanges and cooperation among its members while amplifying Africa’s voice in global partnerships. Nigeria joined the network in 2022 and has been actively engaged since then, including taking on the role of coordinator for the Regulatory Harmonization working group during the recently concluded annual general meeting in 2024.

The 9th NADPA–RADPA Conference and Annual General Meeting, hosted by the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner in Nairobi, Kenya, was marked by an impressive turnout, with over 1500 individuals and organizations in attendance. Noteworthy participants included multinational corporations such as Google, Amazon Web Services, EY and Microsoft, as well as development partners which included the European Union, German Corporation, GIZ, and Digital Transformation Center among others.

The 2025 edition will serve as a pivotal platform for Data Protection Authorities from across Africa to convene, collaborate, and share insights on emerging trends, challenges, and best practices within the data protection and privacy ecosystem. Following the  Federal Executive Council meeting, Dr. ‘Bosun Tijani, the Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, unveiled plans for a groundbreaking initiative aimed at bolstering Nigeria’s presence in the global technology landscape.

Dr. Tijani announced the approval for the conversion of an existing property of the Federal Government in San Francisco, USA, into the Nigerian Digital Technology Exchange Programme Hub, also known as Nigeria Startup House. This initiative underscores the Ministry’s commitment to positioning Nigeria as a key player in the global technology ecosystem.

The Nigerian Startup House will serve as a pivotal platform in advancing Nigeria’s economic interests, attracting Foreign Direct Investment, and enhancing the visibility and positioning of Nigeria’s Startup Ecosystem to garner funding and expertise from global markets and organizations, particularly those represented in the influential San Francisco Bay Area and beyond.

The San Francisco Bay Area, along with nearby Silicon Valley, holds global recognition as a primary source of funding for startup ecosystems, boasting a combined GDP value exceeding $929 billion and hosting over 200 of the world’s largest companies by revenue. Notably, a significant portion of the $1.3 billion funding secured by Nigerian technology startups in 2023 originated from Venture Capital funds based in the Bay Area.

While the ownership of the Nigeria Startup House will remain with the Federal Government, represented by the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation & Digital Economy and the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs, its operations will be overseen by a consortium of Nigerian digital technology companies providing non-public funding for its activities.

Dr. ‘Bosun Tijani, the Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, announced today groundbreaking initiatives aimed at bolstering digital connectivity across Nigeria, following approvals secured during the Federal Executive Council meeting.

Addressing the media, Dr. Tijani highlighted the pivotal approvals, emphasizing their potential to significantly benefit both the Nigerian populace and the burgeoning digital startup ecosystem.

The first approval entails the launch of a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) dedicated to advancing the delivery of an additional 90,000 kilometers of fiber optic cable. This initiative seeks to complement existing connectivity infrastructure, fortifying the national backbone to ensure universal internet access throughout Nigeria.b

Dr. Tijani outlined the meticulous groundwork undertaken to establish the SPV, drawing inspiration from successful Public-Private Partnership models such as NIBSS and NLNG. In collaboration with government and private sector stakeholders, the SPV aims to expand Nigeria’s connectivity backbone to a minimum of 125,000 kilometers, positioning it as Africa’s third-longest terrestrial fiber optic backbone, trailing only Egypt and South Africa.

This expanded coverage is poised to leverage Nigeria’s eight submarine cables, driving increased data capacity utilization beyond the current 10%. Through partnerships like the Broadband Alliance, the enhanced connectivity will bridge existing gaps by linking over 200,000 educational, healthcare, and social institutions nationwide, fostering greater societal inclusion in the benefits of internet access.

The immediate benefits of these initiatives include:

1. Elevating internet penetration in Nigeria to over 70%
2. Potentially reducing the cost of internet access by over 60%
3. Enabling internet access for at least 50% of the 33 million Nigerians currently excluded
4. Stimulating up to 1.5% GDP growth per capita, propelling GDP from $472.6 billion (2022) to $502 billion over the next four years.

Dr. Tijani concluded his remarks by expressing optimism about the transformative impact of these initiatives, signifying a significant step towards #NigerianExcellence in digital connectivity.
