Emechebe expressed optimism about the acquisition, highlighting the potential for growth and expansion. “Distell has a good portfolio and range, however, it seems in the recent past its only Amarula and 4th Street that have sustained growth,” he remarked. He questioned the performance of other notable brands under Distell, including Savanna, Hunter, and the premium cognac, Bisquit.

Emechebe believes that with Nigerian Breweries’ extensive distribution network and strong market penetration in both On Trade and Off Trade sectors, these brands have the opportunity to regain momentum and thrive once again.

The acquisition is also seen as a strategic move that could shift the competitive landscape. Emechebe hinted at the potential responses from other key players in the industry, specifically addressing International Breweries Plc. “What’s next for International Breweries? I believe that this strategic move to expand your portfolio to wine and spirit is in the pipeline. The basis of competition has now changed with this move by Nigerian Breweries.”

In alignment with the Strategic Roadmap and Action Plan (SRAP 2.0), the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has entered into a strategic partnership with the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) to enhance digital literacy and develop tech talent across Nigeria. This collaboration, known as the Digital Literacy for All (DL4ALL) Initiative, aims to equip 30 million Nigerians, particularly the youth, with essential digital skills.

The DL4ALL Initiative seeks to empower individuals to access crucial digital services, engage in the digital economy, compete for jobs, and boost their employability. This effort supports President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which focuses on economic reform and sustained inclusive growth through digital literacy and tech talent cultivation.

The partnership was formalized during a courtesy visit to the NYSC Director-General at their Corporate Headquarters in Abuja. NITDA’s Director-General, Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi CCIE, led the delegation, accompanied by his management team. During the visit, NYSC Director-General, Brig Gen Y.D. Ahmed, committed to establishing a Community Development Service (CDS) to bolster this initiative.

The Honourable Minister of State for Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, who facilitated the meeting, was also in attendance and expressed strong support for the collaboration’s objectives and success.

MultiChoice, Africa’s leading pay-TV operator, has announced that its shareholders are encouraged to accept a $2.9 billion buyout proposal from French media giant Canal+.

If successful, this acquisition will see the Bolloré family’s Vivendi, which owns Canal+, taking control of DSTV, Showmax, GoTV, and several sports broadcasting licenses across Africa. This move is poised to significantly reshape the paid TV landscape on the continent.

Vivendi, a renowned mass media and communications conglomerate headquartered in France, owns Canal+, the company behind the MultiChoice bid. The Bolloré family, a notable French billionaire dynasty with roots in port, logistics, and shipping, owns Vivendi. Canal+ itself is a substantial media entity, generating around €9.6 billion in revenue, which is roughly 3.2 times that of MultiChoice.

With an existing foothold in Africa’s French-speaking regions through Canal+, which boasts 7.6 million subscribers, Vivendi has been steadily increasing its influence on the continent. MultiChoice, with 22 million subscribers, represents a significant expansion opportunity.

This acquisition aligns with Vivendi’s strategic pillars of transformation, internationalisation, and integration. The company is seeking growth beyond the relatively stagnant European market and views Africa, with its promising growth potential, as a strategic target. The continent is expected to have the world’s largest labor force by 2050, presenting a lucrative long-term investment opportunity.

Despite some challenges, including MultiChoice’s declining stock price and increased competition from international players, the acquisition offers Vivendi a chance to dominate Africa’s pay-TV market. Additionally, partnerships like MultiChoice’s recent collaboration with Comcast’s NBC Universal and Sky for Showmax underscore the strategic value of this acquisition.

However, regulatory hurdles remain. South Africa’s Electronic Communications Act restricts foreign ownership in local broadcasting to a maximum of 20% voting rights. Canal+ and MultiChoice are exploring structuring options to comply with these regulations while maintaining MultiChoice’s black ownership credentials under South Africa’s empowerment laws.

Vivendi is committed to navigating these challenges and addressing concerns about potential perceptions of French imperialism in Africa. The company aims to respect and preserve MultiChoice’s local ownership credentials while expanding its influence.

The outcome of this deal remains uncertain, pending regulatory approval and structural adjustments. For now, consumers are unlikely to see immediate changes, though the MultiChoice management team faces a complex transition.

IMPLICATIONS – FORCED LIQUIDATION OF HERITAGE BANK PLC

On Monday, June 3rd, 2024, I returned to work after spending some annual leave in Abuja, arriving in Lagos the previous night. It was highly unusual to receive numerous urgent requests from several branches of our bank early in the morning. Unknown to us, the regulatory ‘umpire’ was about to end the game and had sent in its ‘foot soldiers’ for a disguised liquidity audit.

Within minutes, the situation escalated from a disguised audit to a full-blown liquidation – THE BANK’S BANKING LICENSE WAS REVOKED, AND THE NDIC WAS APPOINTED AS THE LIQUIDATOR OF THE BANK.

What began as an optimistic week quickly turned into a distressing scenario for the banking industry and a particularly sad day for Heritage Bank Plc‘s approximately 2,000 employees.

While the decision may be deemed appropriate, it raises significant concerns about the integrity of the Nigerian banking system and its regulator, the CBN, especially given the repeated assurances of the resilience of the Nigerian banking industry – of course ‘resilience’ can be subjective.

The implications of this liquidation, though having some positives, inevitably add to the current woes of the Nigerian economy. This includes job losses, potential cash losses for Heritage Bank customers, a disincentive for potential investors in the banking industry’s recapitalization drive due to a lack of trust and information asymmetry, and a shift towards traditional means of savings, thereby weakening the financial system’s allocative capabilities.

The liquidation of Heritage Bank PLC may be a prudent decision, but its timing is questionable. It suggests a misalignment between government/regulator policy statements and actions, sending a negative signal to investors globally.

For banks and their managers, this serves as a rallying cry to uphold the highest standards of corporate governance and strategy to prevent similar occurrences in the future.

For affected staff like me, we may have lost the battle for Heritage Bank, but we cannot afford to lose the war for our lives and our unique careers.

Obi called this juxtaposition a painful reminder of Nigeria’s ongoing struggles with democratic governance and underscored the urgent need for comprehensive electoral reforms. “We must learn from South Africa’s example and strive to build a system that restores the people’s faith in our democracy.
