Danbatta Seeks Stakeholders’ Support for Ubiquitous ICT Adoption

The Executive Vice Chairman (EVC) of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Prof. Umar Garba Danbatta, has urged stakeholders in Nigeria to support the Commission in its noble quest to ensure ubiquitous adoption and use of Information and Communications Technology (ICT), with a view to transforming the nation’s economy.

This is just as the EVC pledged the commitment of NCC to continue to be in the vanguard of implementing the Federal Government’s policies aimed at digitalising the nation’s economy.

Danbatta made the call at the weekend while commissioning “Prof Umar Garba Danbatta Computer Laboratory” donated by Huawei Technologies Company Nigeria Limited to the Government Senior Secondary School (GSS), Danbatta, Kano State.

The historic school is the alma mater of Prof. Danbatta, who, himself, has consistently implemented many philanthropic and people-oriented projects in his Danbatta community in addition his strides in driving the development of ICT adoption and usage, via numerous initiatives as the country’s Chief Telecoms Regulator.

Danbatta expressed his gratitude to the company for choosing his alma mater for the important ICT project. He noted that the facility will not only bring invaluable benefits to the students and teachers of the GSS in Danbatta, but also impact other neighbouring schools.

The schools will utilise the tech facility for preparing their pupils for the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) and other educational purposes.

He charged the students and others desirous of acquiring for upgrading their knowledge of ICT to avail themselves of the ample opportunity provided by the new facility within their own domain.

Restating the NCC’s commitment toward digitising Nigeria’s economy, Prof. Danbatta said the Commission will continue to be at the forefront of implementing Federal Government’s policies aimed at achieving the goal.

Speaking earlier, the Director, Public Relation of Huawei Nigeria, Lola Fafore, observed that the fully-fledged computer laboratory donated to the school is equipped with free 4G internet service for 90 days as well as computer-based testing (CBT) training applications for JAMB installed in the computers for the benefit of the students.

She said, as part of the company’s contribution to Nigeria through corporate social responsibility, the firm would continue to promote digital inclusion, especially through provision of access to technology.

“As a company, Huawei looks forward to making more contributions to Nigeria by supporting the NCC in bridging the digital connectivity divide, training talents, building capacity, knowledge transfer and supporting the process of achieving a fully-digital economy,” she said.

Also speaking at the occasion, the Chairman of Danbatta Charity Foundation (DCF), Alhaji Nasiru Danguda, commended the NCC for attracting major development projects to the community, thereby opening unprecedented windows of opportunity for the people.

Danguda said, “This is not the first time Huawei is donating this kind of project in Danbatta as Maimunatu Girls Secondary School is also a previous beneficiary. We, the people of Danbatta, are grateful to you and are also proud that we have Prof Danbatta making us proud with his outstanding performance at NCC, which has attracted us to global giants like Huawei.”

Only recently, traditional rulers and concerned community leaders commended Prof. Umar Garba Danbatta for his role in boosting security and supporting other initiatives aimed at stepping up the tempo of development in Danbatta Local Government Area, Kano State and its environs vis-a-vis concerted effort towards national development.

The inauguration ceremony was organised by DCF in conjunction with four other organisations, namely Zauren Tuntuba, a non-for-profit organisation; Danbatta Academic Forum (DAF); Danbatta Reporters; and, Duniya Ba Hutu.

Also at the event, 10 (ten) female students from Muslim Community College of Health Sciences and Technology, Funtua, and another 20 (twenty) female beneficiaries of the vocational training empowerment programme with bias for tailoring and fashion designing, all under the sponsorship of Prof. Danbatta, celebrated their graduation.

The event, which featured the presentation of sewing machines and other fashion designing items to the two sets of qualified trainees, also saw Prof. Danbatta being conferred with a special recognition award for his immense contribution to the security of Danbatta community, among other community development initiatives

Tell us about Chi Tola Farms ? 

Chitola farms started operations in 2010 but was officially registered in 2016. We are into agro consultancy, processing and marketing. Over these years we have scaled from primary producers of food to processing. We have taken into consideration the supply chain management and our products such as mushrooms, tiger-nuts that have been processed to meet the international standard can be seen in shelves of stores and supermarkets across the country and some ECOWAS countries.

Last year you had a terrible fire incident in your farm, have you gotten back on your feet?

It was one terrible experience but God is always faithful. I haven’t fully recovered, I am still reconstructing the farm and replacing lost equipment, but yes, I am progressing. These are things we learn in life, to me, it is a learning process. It makes us to look at things we didn’t get right and do it rightly. It was a setback to us but we will surmount.

You have been into a lot of things from Tigernuts to Mushroom. how has it been?

 It’s been ok. There are opportunities in agriculture and agro processing and our focus in Chitola farms is adding value to improve livelihoods by providing affordable value added agro products for both local and international consumption. We strongly advocate for the consumption of mushrooms. It has a very high level of protein and the protein in mushroom is better than what you can get in beef or some lifestock due to low cholesterol which has been scientifically proven to be bad for the heart, you know mushroom isn’t saddle with this cholesterol making is perfect for those that are health conscious.

Nigerians do not understand the importance of mushroom as a source of protein. What is the level of sensitization you are doing? 

The mushroom association has and is doing so much and Nigerians are picking interest and mushroom is gaining mass recognition as a perfect alternative to meat. We are still driving the sensitization, though we have barriers such as culture and literacy but we are driving the consumption.

Packaging has always been a challenge for Nigerian farmers. How do you package your products?

 We package to international standards. In any sales business. Packaging is everything. Forget bogus branding, the right packaging does good to your products. That is the way we have been doing, our packaging stores are extremely neat and over the years the level of returns or complaints have been low.

What are the challenges you have been facing as a female farmer?

No challenge I can’t surmount with determination. Truly the government had made so much promises and keeping so little of it bit as an entrepreneur, excuses are there and should not be in view at all. We look at the bigger picture and the Nigerian market is so big so this keeps us going not challenges. Though the issue of support and intervention from the government has always been low but we try to find a way around this.

What distinguishes your mushroom product from others in the shelves?

Quality, Affordability and global best practices. We ensure that we adhere to the hygiene standards and this has made us gain a lot of confidence from our consumers. Ours is more of organic products. Our mushroom is grown in natural condition and we use less preservatives in packaging. These are our selling points.

A concerning number of African companies are not prepared for the inevitability of a cyberattack despite the significant financial and reputational risks, according to Ryan Mer, Managing Director, eftsure Africa, a Know Your Payee™ (KYP) platform provider.

“Too few senior managers view cybersecurity as a business problem and not just a technology problem. The reality is cybersecurity is very much a business consideration. CEOs and CFOs will eventually face critical questions such as: How much money do we spend on cybersecurity? Do we change key processes? How do we create awareness and change company culture? Do we put security ahead of operational functionality? What is the role of internal processes and staff on data security and integrity?”, he says.

Mer adds that because cybersecurity is a business-wide risk it requires more than isolated activities to be addressed. “This is where the role of a Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) is important. The CISO therefore needs to have technical and security skills and competencies, but equally as important, should understand the finance function, operations of the business, and have the business as well as communication skills to effectively create this span.”

While large corporates are more likely to have the resources to fill the CISO role, businesses below the corporate level may not. In such instances, Mer says an outsourced or CISO-as-a-service offering could add immense value. “Ultimately, and especially in relation to the Protection of Personal Information (POPI) Act, there needs to be a coherent strategy and allocated responsibility in place with respect to cybersecurity, data management, compliance and fraud prevention.”

He adds that in the absence of commonplace and well-developed CISO roles, it is the CFO who should lead the way in addressing cybersecurity concerns, particularly in smaller organisations. “It is potentially disastrous for the finance team to be ignorant of cyber risk. Attackers can target many areas of an organisation, but the dangers are usually measured in financial terms: CFOs cannot ignore cybersecurity simply because it is a complex issue outside their area of expertise.”

In addition to having the skills and oversight necessary to take a broad and long-term view of the potential financial impact of an attack, Mer says the CFO is one of the most natural custodians of data, from collection to its ongoing management. “Attacks will very often target the finance department and its team members directly, and in many instances may even be perpetrated by or assisted by internal team members, in attempts to steal and defraud the business. CFOs need to ensure their own vulnerabilities are both understood, and urgently addressed.”

The Lagos State Health Management Agency (LASHMA) has sought for an improved and quality healthcare services from the Lagos State Health Scheme (LSHS) providers to ILERA EKO Enrollees.

Addressing the Medical Directors of the General and Private Hospitals, and Medical Officers of Health (MOH) in Primary Healthcare Centres under the Lagos State Health Scheme (LSHS) at STO Resource Centre, Alausa, the General Manager of Lagos State Health Management Agency (LASHMA), Dr. Emmanuella Zamba said that the Agency has received feedbacks from the enrollees either commending the good services rendered by the providers or complaining about some issues concerning some hospitals.

Dr. Zamba said that both the Health Providers and Enrollees are critical to the sustainability of the Health Scheme.

“Now that we are increasing in number and utilisation, it is our responsibility to make sure that our Providers discharge their duties effectively and the Enrollees have value for their money”, she said.

The General Manager implored the Medical Directors and Medical Officers of Health to ensure that their staff are alive to their responsibilities and treat ILERA EKO Enrollees with utmost care and attention. She added that customers are key to the growth and development of any business, therefore the way customers are engaged is very important.

“It is the dream of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to achieve Universal Health Coverage (UHC) in the State and to realise this, all hands must be on deck. The State Government will not relent in its efforts to provide the enabling environment for the sustainability of the Scheme”, Dr. Zamba said.

She stated that as a Centre of Excellence, much is expected from the LSHS Providers in order to ensure that the State Government attains its UHC policy.

Dr. Zamba further implored the Health Providers to continue to support and cooperate with the State Government so that, together, Lagos can set the pace in health insurance for other States in the country and Africa as a whole.

Presentations were made on various aspects of the Scheme by LASHMA Technical Heads – Dr. Olufemi Serrano (Operations), Mr. Olatunji Rotimi (Business Development and Marketing), Mrs. Adetoro Tayo-Adetoro (Monitoring and Evaluation), Mrs. Aramide Ojo (Finance) and Mr. Sefiu Oladejo (ICT).

The 156km Lagos—Ibadan standard gauge railway line is the first double-track standard gauge rail in West Africa, and the first Nigerian railway line to be started AND completed by the SAME administration, since 1960.

The ground-breaking ceremony for the project was performed by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo on March 7, 2017. Construction started right after, and test-running commenced in December 2020.

There are 21 large and medium sized bridges, with a total length of 6.08km, 12 frame bridges, 256 culverts, 25 overpasses and 10 Stations, in the project. The track-laying covers a total length of 380.03km.

The Ebute Metta Station, known as the Mobolaji Johnson Station, is the largest railway station in West Africa with a holding capacity of 6000 passengers.

Oyo State Governor, ‘Seyi Makinde, on Tuesday, declared that he would do everything within his powers to safeguard the lives of residents of the state, noting that the government would do everything possible to prevent a recurrence of violent attacks on Igangan and other communities in the state.

Governor Makinde made this declaration in Igangan, Ibarapa North Local Government, where he visited the families of last weekend’s attacks, stating that the state would empower local security guards and vigilantes in addition to other measures taken to ensure that insecurity becomes a thing of the past in Ibarapaland.

A statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Mr. Taiwo Adisa, indicated that Governor Makinde, who was in Igangan with top government functionaries and the Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin, deplored the loss of lives.
He added that the government has been able to identify areas where there are lapses, calling on the people to give his government the opportunity to address the situation and put in place the right architecture that will enable them to return to their normal lives without fear.
“I have told your chairman that all the vigilantes and security guards, the government will be responsible for them. This is your government, please give me the opportunity to do the needful so that a meeting like this would not come up again.

“I urge you to give me that chance to make the issue of insecurity here become a thing of the past. Don’t take laws into your hands. We have identified where there are hitches. We are supposed to be going to our farms by now because of the favourable weather. But hold me accountable, I have nowhere to go.

“I believe there are some certain things we put in place, which we think would work but unfortunately, they did not work. Please, give me some time, everything will be resolved.”

Governor Makinde, who promised that his government would work through the sad situation together with the people of the community, stated that it is the last time such a bad occurrence would take place in Igangan.

The governor said: “It is not a situation where there is any magic we can do. We have to work through this and work together through it. But I promise you, this is the last time anything like this will ever happen here. It is a promise I am making to you, and it is a promise I will come through with.

“Please, don’t take laws into your hands. I urge all the families that lost their loved ones to this attack, because sometimes, emotion can really be high. Please, give us the opportunity to resolve this and make this place better for you.

Oyo State governor, ‘Seyi Makinde, on Wednesday, said that his administration will continue to resuscitate moribund industries in the state and create value for the people from such assets.

The governor stated this while commissioning the rehabilitated/refurbished Ilaju Garri Processing Factory in Ilaju community of Ido Local Government Area.
He equally supported members of the Cooperative Society with Seven Million, Five Hundred Thousand Naira (7,500,000 Naira) as take-off grant.

A statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Mr. Taiwo Adisa, quoted him as saying: “We are here today to commission the Ilaju Garri Processing Factory. When we came to inspect it, they told me it can process one trailer-load of Cassava on a daily basis and the only thing that came to my mind was the employment we can generate by putting it back on track.

“We know that it was the late sage, Pa Obafemi Awolowo that initiated the operation of this factory. He was the real architect of Western Nigeria, who put us in a more advantaged position over several regions that time, and we are toeing the same path in Oyo State.
“So, when members of this Cooperative Society came to meet me, I told them we will put the factory back on track and, to the glory of God, it has happened. I told the local engineer handling the project to understudy it and if he can successfully fix the factory and make it work effectively, the work he will do next will be the brick factory at Erunmu. So, he has got another job for himself automatically as a result of what he has done.”

Governor Makinde maintained that as part of his administration’s commitment to fixing infrastructure that target the economic expansion drive of the state, the government has included the Eruwa road in the RAAMP projects.

“I want to inform everyone here today that the road from Eruwa to this point has been captured in our RAAMP programme. We will fix it. I also want to tell the Kabiyesi and Baales that the contractor fixing the road from Apete to Awotan to Akufo will, by the time he gets to Akufo, turn his equipment to the right and fix the road linking Moniya. And if he turns to the left side, he will fix the Akufo road to link the Eruwa road here.

“So, I want to assure you that the Government of Oyo State will continue to resuscitate all moribund projects to create value for our people. The money you requested for, which will enhance your productivity in this factory, will be given to you because we don’t want the work to stop. “We will give you N7.5m to commence the work. We will give you the cheque here now.”

While speaking at the event, the Commissioner for Trade, Industry, Investment and Cooperatives, Hon. Adeniyi Adebisi, appreciated Governor Makinde’s support and policy thrust, which, according to him, “is aimed at rejuvenating the economy of the state using agriculture as a tool.

He added that Governor Makinde’s style of administration in the state has transformed the process of transacting government businesses and activities from analogue to digital, as it operates in the developed world of today.

He said: “So, on behalf of the entire management team of the Ministry of Trade, Industry, Investments and Cooperatives, I thank Your Excellency for the tremendous support given to us from time to time in all the programmes and activities of the Ministry.

“You are, indeed, laying a solid foundation that will stand the test of time for the state and this will occupy an enviable place in the annals of Oyo State.”

Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Wednesday visited the family of the late Prophet T.B. Joshua of the Synagogue Church of All Nations (SCOAN), in Ikotun area of the state, where he described the death of the clergyman as big loss to his immediate family, the State, people of Ejigbo-Ikotun axis and members of his Ministry around the world.

The State Commissioner for Home Affairs, Anofiu Olanrewaju Elegushi, who represented the governor during the condolence visit, also presented a letter officially signed by the governor to the family and the church.

The Governor expressed sympathy with the church and the immediate family of the prophet saying that the state Government was at the Synagogue to pray with the family.

“We are here to condole with your family and the church over the death of Prophet T. B. Joshua.

“We are here to show our sympathy and to also offer our own prayers for the family. That’s why we visited SCOAN today,” he said.

Receiving the delegation, the wife of the deceased, Evelyn Joshua, appreciated the State Government for the visit, describing the death of her husband as an act of God
Mrs Joshua stated that the departure of her husband was not a surprise to her as she has been used to him saying his ministry is what he would die for.

Her words: “On behalf of myself and the entire synagogue family, we are grateful and thankful for your presence here today (Wednesday).

“What happened is an act of God. There is time for everything. Like my husband used to say. That is the word I knew from him very well. This is the job he was known for. This is what he was living for. That is what he was going to die for.

“So, it didn’t come to me as a surprise. I wasn’t surprised when it happened. As we all know, he was in service that day. So, that’s it.”

She said the funeral arrangements would be made public, appealing for the Governor’s presence and support.

“I appreciate you all. I’m pleading, this is my message to the Governor. We need you; we need your presence,” she said.

Also among the delegation, include the Special Adviser to the Governor on Civic Engagement, Princess Aderemi Adebowale, the Presiding Chaplain, Chapel of Christ The Light, Venerable Ezekiel Oluwadare, Directors of the State’s Ministry of Home Affairs, among other State officials.

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has urged Nigerian youths to leverage Internet/broadband access to unleash their potentials for innovation and creativity, as well as their quest for job opportunities and skills acquisition.

The Executive Vice Chairman (EVC) of the Commission, Prof. Umar Garba Danbatta, made the call during the presentation of 100 pieces of mattresses to the Federal Capital Territory’s Permanent Orientation Camp of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Kubwa, Abuja recently.

The presentation of the mattresses was in demonstration of the Commission’s solidarity and corporate social responsibility (CSR) to support the replacement of some of the items carted away from the camp by hoodlums during the EndSARS protests of October 27, 2020.

Speaking on behalf of Danbatta during the presentation, NCC’s Director, Public Affairs, Dr. Ikechukwu Adinde, said the youths play a great role in nation building as they contribute to national development by bringing about social reforms, noting that the NCC will always support the course of the youth in the country.

Adinde said the Commission, has various youth initiatives and programmes aimed at making them self-reliant while enhancing their contributions to the economy.

He, therefore, charged the corps members to use Internet services for gainful and profitable activities, while also advising them to refrain from using their access to telecoms services for irresponsible and nefarious activities, which could land them in trouble.

“Access to telecommunication services, especially the Internet, plays a key role in job creation for the youths and ultimately for accelerating economic development. It is critical to the overall socio-economic well-being of every economy and the youth have a greater role to play, as agents of social change, in using the Internet for positive ventures,” he said.

He also charged the large gathering of corps members, who attended the presentation ceremony, to take advantage of the various consumer-centric initiatives which the Commission has emplaced to protect and empower them as active users of telecoms services.

These include the NCC’s toll-free number 622 for consumer complaints resolution, the NCC Do-No-Disturb 2442 Short Code for dealing with unsolicited text messages, the 112 National Emergency Number managed by the Commission’s Emergency Communications Centres (ECC) located across the country.

Meanwhile, NYSC FCT Coordinator, Abdul Suleman, expressed appreciation for the solidary and support shown by the NCC to the NYSC family, especially regarding the welfare of corps members deployed to the Federal capital for the mandatory one year service to the nation.

“I am happy to receive 100 mattresses donated by the NCC, under the leadership of Prof. Umar Garba Danbatta, the Executive Vice Chairman/CEO, to alleviate the pains inflicted by the miscreants who vandalized the camp. The generosity of the NCC is coming at a time it is most needed, especially with the orientation camp in session.”

“On behalf of the Director-General, Management, Staff and Corps members, I wholeheartedly express our profound gratitude to the NCC for the magnanimous gesture and for investing in the Nigerian youths,” Suleman said.

At the presentation ceremony, the Commission created a lot of fun and excitement for the corps members through the ‘fast-finger’ game where airtime of different network operators were picked up freely by the corps members. Smart phones were also given out to lucky winners of the raffle draw organized by the Commission.
