This is time I will appreciate David Nweze Umahi. Having spent 5 hours from Enugwu-Ọka, almost 8 hours from Ọnịcha-Enugwu; what about hours from Enugwu to Owere? Enugwu to Port Harcourt; Enugwu to Aba?

If you say the Fulani gave him money to do so as propagandists claim, are others not doing the same? What is stopping them from developing their areas? Some of you defend incapacitation, claiming somewhere is the federal road that’s why it shouldn’t be done whereas Ụmahị has worked on the federal roads in the state.

Once a beautiful state and the most beautiful state in the southeast has been handed over to the hands of God. Enugwu cities are piled up with dirt and waste products around the road. Portholes. Inside Independence Layout you will see piles of dirty along the road. Ebe niile ana-esi isi. I remember when you will drop just a sachet water nylon mistakenly, you will be arrested and bailed 10k. Baskets/waste bins were dropped along the road in Enugwu towns. Everywhere was neat. Now?
I don’t even want to mention Ọka. I was thinking I was in Aba last week I was in UNIZIK Junction, boarding Keke to Abakaliki Street. Everywhere was messed up and I was questioning what makes Ọka a Capital city of Anambra? Going to Secretariat nkọ?
Should I talk about the other Igbo state? No need.
If there is one thing the events of the last few weeks should teach us, it is that Ala-Igbo and Ndigbo are actually more susceptible to being doomed from within than from any external factors.
I mean, regardless of who was behind the killings, destruction, arson and brigandage as well as the Boko-Haramic assault on education the East was visited with in the past few days and weeks, what is not in doubt is the fact that there are Igbos, well educated Igbos who OPENLY and PUBLICLY supported the carnage and made excuses to justify same. They are everywhere all over social media. And some of these people are medical doctors (one Mr Zubby who read medicine from the prestigious UNN and is now a medical doctor spent the past 2 days defending the fact that WAEC students from that Nkume secondary school were chased out of their exam hall by the sit-at-home enforcers. Remember, this is not some uneducated guy. He is a medical doctor who certainly wrote WEAC himself and knows you can’t get into any Nigerian University without that particular exam (English language) taken that day. Yet, he believes that jeorpadizing the academic future of innocent kids by truncating their chances of acquiring university education is a reasonable way of liberating Ndigbo from whatever bondage they are in. And there are thousands of educated Igbos who think like Zuby. So many of them are on that my video post of the Nkume incident. Very educated people.
To me, this is the most shockingly petrifying of the whole thing. That an Igbo person would not only think the destruction of the economy, lives, property as well as the academic future of his own people is acceptable under any guise but that such is the right way to get back at the govt (state or federal) for any act of injustice against Ndigbo.
I am not just appalled at the sheer mental barrenness behind this illogical logic, I’m ashamed that a human being with a functioning brain would think himself worthless enough as to defend those unconscionable acts.
Remember, I’m not talking of who is behind the killings, arson, destruction and WAEC disruption. Whether it is Lord Lugard, Buhari himself or even the DSS (like some have suggested) that is behind the mayhem is not the issue here. I’m not even discussing the rightness or wrongness of the sit-at-home or whether or not it has been suspended. What I am discussing which I believe should worry every Igbo person just as it is worrying me is the fact that there are Igbos, educated Igbos who publicly defend and justify these things and are currently doing that even as I type.
This is heartbreaking.
We need to stop pretending that the level of mental degradation that produced people who reason this way can be cured by a mere suspension of sit-at-home or even the release of one of our own currently being held in Abuja.
Beyond the calamitous leadership in the East (some of our politicians are a walking disappointment), we have a far bigger and more lethal problem in our hands and that is the proliferation of “mental orphans” in our region (apologies to my friend, Temi Dayo). This is a problem that requires urgent attention if we intend to salvage our noble ancestry from the savagery of her numberless Savages.

Gov. Ugwuanyi signs anti-open grazing bill into law
Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State has signed the anti-open grazing bill into law, at the Government House, Enugu.
The bill which is for a law to prohibit open grazing, regulate cattle ranching, and for connected purposes was recently passed by the Enugu State House of Assembly.
Recall that the Leader of the House, Rt. Hon. Ikechukwu Ezeugwu, had explained after the passage of the bill, that it would be cited as the “Prohibition of Open Grazing and Cattle Ranching Law of Enugu State” after the governor’s assent.
Gov. Ugwuanyi’s assent to this bill is expected to improve security and peace in the state.
The Lagos State Government is set to scale up interventions for endemic Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs), especially Schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminth, in local governments and wards with the prevalence of the diseases, the Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi has said.
Abayomi, who made this known today at a Data Dissemination Workshop on Schistosomiasis Implementation in Lagos State organised by the Federal Ministry of Health, in collaboration with Lagos State Ministry of Health and a non-governmental organisation, Mission to Save the Helpless (MITOSATH), noted that the intervention aimed at the control and elimination of NTDs will be accorded the priority it deserves, as part of the State government’s disease surveillance control programmes and policies.
The Commissioner, represented at the event by the Director, Epidemiology, Biosecurity and Global Health, Dr. Ismail Abdul-Salam, explained that adequate budgetary provision has been made for various NTDs activities outlined for implementation by the Neglected Tropical Disease Unit of the State Ministry of Health as part of the scale-up of interventions.
He said: “The Lagos State Government is giving priority, support and consideration to the control and elimination of NTDs. The headship of the State Ministry of Health and Primary Health Care Board are passionate about the control of NTDs and we are now more committed to ensuring that we achieve reasonable control in record time”.
“We know that Lagos State has a high prevalence of some Neglected Tropical Diseases, especially Schistosomiasis, in some of our local government areas. We have several diseases on the list of NTDs and the level of endemicity varies from one LGA to another”, the Commissioner averred.
While expressing satisfaction at the successful implementation of the Y2019 Mass Administration of Medicines against Schistosomiasis sponsored by MITOSATH and WHO, Abayomi noted that late commencement of NTDs interventions in Lagos has not deterred the State government from showing exemplary leadership to other States.
He disclosed that the State government has taken a cue from lessons learnt from the Y2019 Mass Administration of Medicines against Schistosomiasis to rejig interventions targeted at control and elimination of Neglected Tropical Diseases in Lagos.
The Commissioner, however, appealed to partners to support the State government in the drive towards the control of NTDs by targeting identified gaps in various NTDs interventions for effective strategic and effective implementation.
“NTDs are common in environments where there are issues of water, this is why sanitation and hygiene are very important. These are issues that if taken care of, we will have a much-reduced prevalence of NTDs. It is also in view of this that relevant MDAs are involved in our interventions because some of the interventions are carried out for school-age children at the ward and community level”, Abayomi said.
Earlier in her remarks, the Executive Director of MITOSATH, Dr. Fransisca Olamiju, said Lagos State is the first in Nigeria to implement Mass Administration of Medicines against Schistosomiasis using ward level strategy, which has been found to be very effective.
According to her, the dissemination workshop has afforded various NTD stakeholders and partners the opportunity to share the knowledge, best practices and lessons learnt from the implementation of Mass Administration of Medicines in Lagos State.
Olamiju added that the implementation of Mass Administration of Medicines afforded the State government and implementing partners to introduce ward level strategy interventions for immunisation programmes and other health interventions alongside the LGA based intervention.
While noting that another campaign for Mass Administration of Medicines against Schistosomiasis would soon commence in some endemic wards in Lagos State, the Executive Director posited that safe water, good sanitation and hygiene, especially proper and regular handwashing practice, including putting an end to open defecation, is vital to eliminating Schistosomiasis.
Olamiju also appealed for a private sector engagement for the elimination of the disease, adding that they should always remember that there is an NTD burden in Lagos as they look at their corporate social responsibility.
Representative of the World Health Organisation, Dr. Sulaiman Aliyu, stated that WHO remains committed to providing free medicines for the treatment of Neglected Tropical Diseases.
“The World Health Organisation is committed to providing all the medicines. Year after year WHO facilitates the donation of millions of tablets for the Neglected Tropical Diseases”, he said.
