Professor Ndubuisi Ekekwe, a renowned entrepreneur and investor, has voiced his concerns over the recent financial report released by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). The report reveals a significant increase in the federal government’s expenditure on debt servicing in the first five months of 2024, amounting to approximately $2.2 billion.

The CBN’s financial report indicates that the debt servicing cost from January to May 2024 is about 96.32% higher than the $1.12 billion spent during the same period in 2023. The monthly breakdown of the debt servicing expenditure is as follows:

  • January: $560.52 million
  • February: $283.22 million
  • March: $276.16 million
  • April: $215.20 million
  • May: $854.36 million

Commenting on the report, Professor Ekekwe remarked, “This is where we are as a country according to the Central Bank of Nigeria. Someone may argue that Nigeria was saving money via fuel subsidies. However, in the Igbo Nation, if a bird leaves the ground and perches on the ant-hill, the elders will say that it is still on the ground. Nigeria may not be allocating money for subsidies (it claims), but it is allocating more for debt servicing as a result of decisions around Naira floating and fuel subsidies! Like I noted, nothing has changed, except the style!”

Professor Ekekwe emphasized the necessity for Nigeria to shift its focus from financialization to tangible production. “Good people, if anyone tells you that Nigeria can be made whole through financialization, there is a bridge available to buy. We must make things (modern and old) for Nigeria to rise, and our leaders must provide platforms for such to happen. Those platforms include electricity, security, and rule of law! Simply, someone must be annoyed and angry that for 60 years we cannot figure out how to provide electricity to citizens and companies,” he stated.

Professor Ekekwe’s comments highlight the critical need for sustainable infrastructure and systemic reforms to foster economic growth and stability in Nigeria. His call to action urges leaders to address fundamental issues that have long hindered the nation’s progress.

#### Signs PDA on 400-500mmscf Gas Deal, Aims for FID by December 2024

NNPC Limited has taken a significant step forward in monetizing Nigeria’s extensive natural gas resources by signing a Project Development Agreement (PDA) with Golar LNG. This agreement will facilitate the deployment of a Floating Liquefied Natural Gas (FLNG) facility offshore in the Niger Delta, Nigeria.

The signing ceremony, held on June 10, 2024, saw key executives from both organizations in attendance. Representing NNPC Limited were Chief Financial Officer Umar Ajiya, Executive Vice President of Gas Power & New Energy Olalekan Ogunleye, and Executive Vice President of Upstream Mrs. Oritsemeyiwa Eyesan. Golar LNG was represented by CEO Karl Fredrik Staubo.

This PDA represents a major milestone in the effort to commercialize Nigeria’s gas reserves, aligning with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s strategy to boost the nation’s economic prosperity through accelerated gas asset commercialization. The agreement focuses on monetizing significant proven gas reserves from shallow water resources offshore Nigeria, aiming to process approximately 400-500mmscf/d to produce LNG, LPG, and condensate.

Both NNPC Limited and Golar LNG are committed to reaching a Final Investment Decision (FID) by the end of the fourth quarter of 2024, with the goal of achieving first gas by 2027.

Golar LNG Limited is a prominent independent owner and operator of LNG infrastructure, which includes carriers, floating storage and regasification units (FSRUs), and floating liquefaction (FLNG) vessels. This collaboration with NNPC Limited is set to enhance Nigeria’s capability to efficiently utilize its natural gas resources.

The community of Nnewi mourns the loss of Engr. Dr. (Chief) Ajulu Gilbert Uzodike, a pioneering industrialist and philanthropist. Known affectionately as Oziụzọ Nnewi, Uzodike’s contributions to his community and country have left an indelible mark.

A neighbor and close friend, Ikenga Ezenwegbu, remembers Uzodike as a man of extraordinary generosity and vision. “You were my brother, a friend, and an exemplary neighbor,” Ezenwegbu recalls. Uzodike’s community spirit was exemplified when he installed a massive generator at his mansion in Nnewi, providing free electricity to his neighbors.

Uzodike’s entrepreneurial spirit extended beyond his personal life. He established world-class industrial companies in Nnewi, providing employment and fostering management talent among local residents. His companies, including the well-known Cutix Plc, were listed on the Nigeria Stock Exchange (NSE), a testament to his forward-thinking approach.

In their last conversation, Uzodike discussed plans to encourage more Nnewi entrepreneurs to list their companies on the NSE. He was slated to speak at a seminar on “Transfer of Generational Wealth in the South East,” organized by Ezenwegbu, on December 22, 2023. Unfortunately, a medical emergency necessitated a trip to the USA, from which he never returned. Even in his absence, he contributed to the seminar by sending his prepared speech.

Uzodike’s generosity was not limited to business. He extended his hospitality during personal milestones, such as hosting guests for Ezenwegbu’s mother’s funeral in 2018 and attending the funeral of Ezenwegbu’s mother-in-law in October 2023. His presence was a constant source of support.

Ezenwegbu fondly recalls their intellectual debates on politics, economy, and culture. “You were unassuming, humble, a talent hunter, and a secret benefactor to many,” he reflects. Uzodike’s unique approach set him apart from other Nnewi billionaires, marked by his foresight, judgment, and solution-oriented mindset.

Uzodike’s achievements cannot be solely attributed to his wartime experience or his academic credentials from Harvard. Ezenwegbu believes he was destined to make a difference. “We, your brothers, neighbors, and friends, can testify to your greatness,” he asserts.

While acknowledging Uzodike’s human imperfections, Ezenwegbu emphasizes that his positives far outweighed his negatives. Uzodike’s death coincided with the loss of Ezenwegbu’s eldest sister, making it a particularly devastating week for their community.

As Nnewi bids farewell to a beloved son, Ezenwegbu offers a poignant tribute: “May God forgive your imperfections and welcome you into Paradise. Nnewi loves you and will always remember you. I will always do.”

The push for the creation of Anioma State has gained significant momentum, with advocates citing an urgent need to rectify longstanding geopolitical imbalances in Nigeria’s state distribution. Currently, the South East geopolitical zone has only five states, compared to other zones which, except for the North West with seven states, generally have six states. This disparity translates into reduced legislative representation and resource allocation for the South East, which has only 15 senators compared to the 18 senators from other zones.

A bill proposing the creation of Anioma State has been presented, aiming to correct this historical oversight. Anioma would comprise nine local government areas, six of which are rich in oil and gas resources. The area is also known for its significant human capital, underscoring its viability and sustainability as a new state. Proponents argue that establishing Anioma State is not merely about increasing the number of states but ensuring fair representation and equitable resource distribution for the South East.

Support for the Anioma State creation spans various stakeholders, including the Anioma socio-cultural group, Izu Anioma, and the Pan Igbo cultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo. The political leadership and traditional rulers of Anioma, notably led by the late Asagba of Asaba, Obi (Prof) Chike Edozien, have been consistent advocates, engaging in numerous meetings and discussions, including with former President Olusegun Obasanjo, to voice their consensus on the matter.

The creation of Anioma State is viewed as a critical step towards achieving justice and equity for the South East. With widespread support from various factions, the time to act is now, to address past imbalances and ensure fair representation for the South East in national affairs.
