In a generous act of philanthropy, Stanley Ugbo Okeke, in collaboration with the Lord Zeus Foundation, has donated musical equipment, a Toyota Sienna car, and a cash reward of  millions of  Naira to Theresa Oforji, popularly known as Nwanyi Umuoji, a celebrated musician from Idemili Local Government Area in Anambra State. This initiative is part of the foundation’s ongoing commitment to uplifting the Igbo community in Southeast Nigeria through financial support, education, and health outreach programs.

At the presentation ceremony, the founder of the Lord Zeus Foundation, known as Lord Zeus, highlighted the significance of patience and resilience. He acknowledged Theresa Oforji’s contributions to the music industry during a time when there were few financial gains for artists. “Today, with the support of Stanley Ugbo Okeke, we are proud to present her with this cash reward, new musical equipment, and a Toyota Sienna car to aid her in logistics,” Lord Zeus stated.

Lord Zeus expressed gratitude for the continued support from his partners and remained optimistic about future endeavors. “When I say it can only get better, believe me, it will get better. I am glad to announce that Queen Theresa Oforji is now a verified and certified car owner, along with a cash reward of one million Naira.”

He also extended heartfelt thanks to Stanley Ugbo Okeke, CEO of DPD Investment Limited, acknowledging him as “Ekwueme 101” for his generosity. “I pray that God will replenish you and grant you all the desires of your heart according to His will,” he added. Citing a biblical verse, Isaiah 60:12, he concluded, “When the time is right, I, the Lord, will make it happen. It can only get better.”

The Lord Zeus Foundation continues to make impactful interventions in the Southeast, supporting communities and individuals through various initiatives that foster hope, empowerment, and a brighter future.

In a pioneering effort to engage the younger generation in environmental conservation, the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) and the Lagos State Parks and Gardens Agency (LASPARK) have held a one-day summer boot camp for children, tagged: “Eco Explorers Bootcamp” at the Dr. Oluyomi Abayomi Finnih Park by Opebi Link Bridge, Oregun, Ikeja, Lagos.

According to the General Manager of LASEPA, Dr. Babatunde Ajayi, the “Eco Explorers Bootcamp” is aimed at fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of nature among children, while inculcating in them sustainable environmental best practices.

He noted the significance of the bootcamp in shaping the environmental consciousness of young participants, saying “The Eco Explorers Bootcamp is an essential platform for children to learn about their environment and the importance of protecting it”.

“We aim to impart knowledge on climate change, global warming, waste reduction, recycling, and energy conservation. It is crucial that these young minds grasp these concepts early on and carry them into adulthood, contributing positively to environmental sustainability”.

Ajayi stressed the need to integrate environmental education into children’s lives, just as he highlighted the State government’s commitment to delivering a cleaner, safer and sustainable environment to the younger generation as part of the efforts to address the issue of climate change and its attendant effects on both humans and the environment.

“We are thrilled to witness the active engagement of the next generation in environmental conservation. This initiative is a crucial step in nurturing a culture of environmental responsibility from a young age”, the GM added.

In her welcome remarks, Executive Assistant to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Environmental Protection Matters, Ms. Tolulope Adebowale said the boot camp is a testament to the State government’s commitment to promoting environmental awareness from an early age.

In her words, “By involving children in environmental activities at a tender age like this, we aim to cultivate a lifelong appreciation for nature and inculcate in the younger generation sustainable living practices for a better tomorrow”.

She noted the importance of the purpose of the advocacy programme, noting that it was designed to educate children on environmental protection and the responsibilities of being a conscientious global citizen.

“Our goal is to ensure that as these children grow, they become responsible stewards of the environment. While efforts are ongoing to enhance our environmental practices, it is imperative that we also equip the younger generation with the knowledge and values needed to sustain these efforts”.

Adebowale averred that the Eco Explorers Boot camp, which is the maiden edition, would be made to become an annual and continuous event for kids across the State to learn and know more about environmental conservation.

The event featured an engaging lineup of interactive activities designed to immerse children in the principles of sustainable living.

Such activities included science experiments, painting, gardening and planting, recycling & upcycling, Natural Resources, a Library/video Exhibition and a variety of educational games that emphasised natural conservation, waste reduction and recycling.

The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), in collaboration with the Health Records Officers Registration Board of Nigeria, recently organized a capacity-building workshop aimed at enhancing the skills of Health Records Officers from various states across the country. The event, which focused on the critical importance of data protection in the health sector, was inaugurated by the Minister of State for Health, Dr. Tunji Alausa, represented by his Senior Technical Assistant, Dr. Mrs. Obiajulu Ugbo. The National Commissioner and CEO of NDPC, Dr. Vincent Olatunji, delivered the opening remarks.

Dr. Olatunji highlighted the sensitive nature of health data, emphasizing the need for rigorous protection measures. He stressed the significance of the training, noting that the participants represent over 40,000 health professionals responsible for managing health records nationwide. To illustrate the potential risks, he shared real-life case studies demonstrating the severe consequences of data breaches on patient safety. Dr. Olatunji urged the attendees to focus on the training and participate in the National Certification process, which he described as a vital step toward seizing opportunities within the burgeoning data privacy sector.

In recognition of his contributions to data protection within the health sector, Dr. Vincent Olatunji was honored with an honorary membership award during the event. The workshop also saw the participation of the Registrar of the Health Records Officers Registration Board of Nigeria, Alhaji Babagana Mustapha, alongside other key officials from the Board.

In addition to the workshop, the NDPC was recently celebrated as the Most Outstanding MDA of the Year at the DigiVation Future Summit & Awards 2024. NNPC Limited Partners with China Engineering & Machinery Corporation for Gwagwalada Independent Power Plant Project

 

In a landmark move to enhance Nigeria’s power generation capacity, NNPC Limited has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with China Engineering & Machinery Corporation (CMEC) for the co-funding of the Gwagwalada Independent Power Plant (GIPP) Phase-1 Project. The signing ceremony took place in Beijing this Thursday, reflecting the deepening collaboration between Nigeria and China in the energy sector.

The MoU was signed by Mr. Olalekan Ogunleye, Executive Vice President, Gas Power & New Energy of NNPC Limited, and Mr. Zhang Daguang, Chairman of CMEC Nigeria. This agreement represents a significant step forward in the development of the GIPP, which is part of Nigeria’s broader strategy to utilize its abundant gas resources for sustainable power generation and industrial growth.

The Gwagwalada Independent Power Plant, also known as the Abuja IPP, is a 350-megawatt gas-fired power project that forms a key component of the Ajaokuta-Kaduna-Kano (AKK) Gas Pipeline Project. The AKK pipeline, currently under development, is a critical piece of infrastructure designed to transport natural gas from the Ajaokuta region in central Nigeria through Kaduna to Kano, in the northern part of the country. The GIPP is expected to be one of the major end-users of gas from this pipeline, providing a reliable and cleaner energy source for the nation’s capital and its environs.

Strategic Importance to Nigeria’s Energy Sector

The GIPP Phase 1 Project is aligned with Nigeria’s Gas Master Plan, which aims to develop a robust gas infrastructure network, promote domestic gas utilization, and reduce the country’s reliance on oil as a primary revenue source. This project is crucial to the government’s “Decade of Gas” initiative, which seeks to leverage Nigeria’s vast gas reserves – the largest in Africa – to drive economic growth, industrialization, and energy security.

By providing an additional 350MW to Nigeria’s power grid, the GIPP Phase 1 Project is poised to address the perennial issue of electricity shortages that have hampered the country’s economic development. Beyond increasing electricity supply, the project is expected to create thousands of direct and indirect jobs, reduce gas flaring by utilizing gas that would otherwise be wasted, and stimulate industrial activities in Abuja and its surrounding areas.

Deepening Bilateral Ties Between Nigeria and China

The MoU between NNPC Limited and CMEC underscores the growing partnership between Nigeria and China in critical sectors such as energy, infrastructure, and technology. Over the years, Chinese firms have become key players in Nigeria’s infrastructural development, participating in various projects ranging from railways to telecommunications.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Mr. Ogunleye highlighted the strategic importance of the partnership, stating, “This collaboration is a testament to NNPC’s commitment to ensuring energy security for Nigeria by harnessing our natural gas resources effectively. Partnering with CMEC, a renowned global engineering firm, will bring world-class expertise and technology to the GIPP project, ensuring its successful execution and operation.”

Mr. Zhang Daguang of CMEC also expressed optimism about the partnership, noting that the MoU marks a new chapter in China-Nigeria relations. “We are excited to work with NNPC to bring sustainable energy solutions to Nigeria. This project represents a unique opportunity to combine CMEC’s engineering expertise with Nigeria’s vast natural gas resources to foster development and economic growth,” he said.

Project Impact and Future Prospects

Upon its completion, the GIPP Phase 1 Project will serve as a catalyst for further investments in Nigeria’s energy sector, encouraging both local and international stakeholders to explore additional opportunities in the country’s gas and power industries. It will also contribute to the Nigerian government’s efforts to achieve its climate goals by reducing greenhouse gas emissions associated with gas flaring.

As Nigeria continues to push for the diversification of its energy mix and the adoption of cleaner energy sources, projects like the GIPP Phase 1 are crucial for meeting the country’s energy needs today while ensuring sustainable energy for future generations.

With the signing of this MoU, NNPC Limited and CMEC are poised to turn the vision of the Gwagwalada Independent Power Plant into a reality, fostering a brighter and more prosperous future for Nigeria.

LAGOS PROCUREMENT AGENCY SEEKS WORLD BANK’S SUPPORT

 

The Lagos State Public Procurement Agency has appealed to the World Bank for support to further strengthen the Agency for a more effective and efficient delivery of its statutory functions.

The Director-General of the Agency, Mr. Fatai Idowu Onafowote made the appeal recently while receiving members of a six-man delegation of the World Bank led by the Bank’s Procurement Practice Manager, Western and Central African Region, Ms. Nazaneen Ismail Ali, who were on a one-day visit to the Agency in Lagos.

While expressing appreciation to the World Bank for its support to the Agency in the past, Mr. Onafowote stated that the Agency was in need of more support from the Bank in the areas of procurement reforms, modernization of its systems and processes and full roll-out of the e-procurement system in the State.

The Director-General also sought the support of the Bank for the Agency in other areas, including capacity building and development of personnel, affirmative procurement, Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) and facilitation of exchange programmes for its personnel to enable them to learn from other parts of the world.

Mr. Onafowote explained that with only three pilot Ministries, Departments and Agencies of the State onboarded on the e-procurement platform at inception in 2019, a total of 140 Ministries, Departments and Agencies are already onboarded on the platform while 19 others are also scheduled for onboarding before the end of this year.

He also pointed out that the deployment of technology into the public procurement system of the State has greatly enhanced transparency, efficiency and ease of doing business, thereby making the State a choice destination for investors.

Also speaking at the occasion, another member of the World Bank delegation and a lead Procurement Specialist, Mr. Ishtiak Siddique, stressed the need for the Agency to modernise its laws to ensure that it accommodates recent development, particularly with the financial autonomy recently granted to the Local Government Areas of the country by the Supreme Court of Nigeria.

Esther delivered an outstanding performance, setting two new Paralympic Records with lifts of 112kg and 118kg. Her achievement placed her just behind China’s Zhe Cui, who secured the Gold by lifting 119kg.

Overwhelmed with emotion, Esther was moved to tears as she celebrated her first Paralympic medal, a Silver, in the women’s 41kg powerlifting category.

Hailing from Abia State, Esther’s achievement is a testament to the determination and strength of Nigerian athletes. Her success has brought pride to the nation and further highlighted Nigeria’s presence on the global Paralympic medal map.
